I am boating and all the sudden start to smell a burning. Open the hatch and the rectifier is smoking. Within 5 min it has totally melted away. How to get my boat in on one engine with out a violent shutoff on the other. About 10 miles from ramp that's a long no wake mode trip

@Alex Smith shut down trouble engine, leave that throttle in forward. Do not go over 5-6 mph on good engine unless you can clamp off water intake. Feel free to call me.

Try to clamp off dead engine water intake, if not possible leave that throttle in forward position to try and keep that engine from getting waterlogged. Proceed very slow limp back to dock

Sorry to hear you troubles, just go slow if you can't clamp the engine off and get back safely,

Since there's not much to do to help you right now just confirm it is #22 on the diagram below that has melted,
I don't think I've heard of that happening before. I know your boat is new to you, were you able to run a YDS on it? Did you ever find a local mechanic, did he ever do anything for your boat?
your engine is a MR1, is it an High Output version of the MR1?

Thanks for all the help. Just got it back to a closer boat ramp. I will asses the damage and let you know what I find. Will definitely be putting in the coolent bypass valve asap. I also attached a picture of the rectifier from the good engine as well as the problem engine.

Something does not look right. I realize this is not the high output MR-1 but it does not appear to be mounted correctly. Anyone have pictures of their 2007 21' AR?
I have never heard of the rectifier going bad.

Two more pictures. I have taken it out 5 times since we got it with no problems. I did change the oil and plugs for that engine before taking it out the first time. The only other would be a new bilge pump I put on after our first run. But again have ran it 4 times In between

No mechanic found a guy that does jet skis say he can help if ever needed. I did run the software before purchasing the boat. Nothing showed up

Glad you got home safe @Alex Smith. A rectifier changes AC voltage to DC voltage. The only thing that comes to mind immediately is a direct short on the DC side of the rectifier which, I believe, goes to the battery. I don't have the circuit layout. Maybe somebody can post one up. Good thing you caught it before a potential fire.

Those things go bad. The one in my 2006 fx ho waverunner went bad 2 years ago and some else had it go bad on their 140 hp 998 cc mr1 motor in their 230. However, when mine died it just made starting the engine difficult and eventually impossible. It did not melt away. The good news is if it just that part you can get them cheap for between $50 and $100, sometimes $30ish if you are lucky.

Anyone have a part number from the manual? Can we compare that to the one that still exists? I wonder if someone put in a cheap aftermarket before you bought it...

I hope it's that easy I took a breather for the night going to get back at it in the AM. My main concern now is what would make it happen. No alerts just smoking. that same engine blew the 30 amp fuse earlier last week.

Wow. Never heard of this happening before. Very curious what caused it to melt like that. @Alex Smith you and I have the same boat. I had a valve issue a while back and I used a Yamaha jet ski mechanic in Destin. He races jet skis and I know him. If your mechanic guy doesn't work out for whatever reason, then I can get you my guy's information when I get back home from our Spring Break Vacation.

Well I'm guessing the fuse blew because of the same short. Hopefully the short is in the rectifier and not somewhere else down the line. The part that melted was just the weakest link in the short, if it was a higher gauge wire then the wire would have melted instead of the rectifier.
