I changed my mind about buying a pivot enduro bike. My friend in NYC helped me out and picked up this clean 2017 specialized demo 8 alloy for me. I will get it when I go to NYC in april! X01 drivetrain, rockshox boxxer team coil fork, ohlins coil, and dt swiss 350 hubs. I will be swapping the brakes for the shimano zee's on my gf's bike. And for my jekyll, i'm thinking to put it on a diet and remove the cushcores and coil suspension. It would be nice to have a 32lb trail bike that climbs and jumps good and leave the DH bike as a plow bike.

So yeah, we have 4 bikes now.

@I_squared_r Nice collection...a few of my babies below.

2014 Cannondale EVO - super stiff frame and fast, lacks comfort on longer rides
2016 Giant Propel - DI shifters are nice
20xx Cannondale Synapse - wife's bike
2014 Cannondale Trigger - 29'er wheels make this a beast on the rough stuff but less nimble for tight technical riding
2018 Yeti SB5 - newest to the collection, yeti lives up to their name for great mountain bikes.

and 2 Walmart cruisers for when we go to Destin!!!

OK gurus.....I need some gear suggestions.

It's springtime and I'm starting to get back on the trails. I'm out of practice, out of shape, and am somewhat going against doctors orders to go riding. I don't care, it's a good time a good workout, and I'm not going to give up that easy.

My gear question centers around carrying "stuff" with you on the trail. I got some tools for Christmas, and currently run a crappy seat bag from Walmart. It attaches acceptably and securely enough, but it rattles. A lot. That rattle takes away from the enjoyment on the trail. I've stuff some paper towels in there, and wrapped the "jingly bits" in some thin fabric I stole from my wifes craft room. It's still not great.

Contents of underseat storage:
(2) 38g CO2 cartridges
(1) multi-tool (forget the model)
(1) CO2 inflator nozzle (tiny little thing)
(1) set of three tire levers
(1) tube patch kit

Contents of jersey pockets:
Cell phone in center pocket
Car keys in left pocket
License/Insurance card/credit card/$20cash in right pocket

I also carry a hand pump, but it mounts to the bottom cage mounts on the frame and is generally quiet. I also carry (2) large size water bottles in cages mounted to the bike.

All my local buddies are telling me to just get a backpack. They're right, that would work and wouldn't be rattly or loud. In general though, I hate backpacks. They're sweaty, they mess with my balance, the don't feel great on my back. I've had a couple "decent" packs through the years, but never a cycling specific pack, so I might not understand what I'm missing, but $100 to try one is a gamble.

What I would really like to find is something that is a bit more rigid to mount under the seat, or to the frame at some level. I'm thinking something like a hard sided piece of luggage with a soft lining to keep it quiet. I can't really find much though. I've found racks for bikepacking, but those offer far more volume than I need. Backpacks are similar. There is a lot of volume in there, and I just need a small amount of volume for what I carry. Even on longer rides (10mi) my two water bottles are enough to keep my hydrated back to the car, so I don't really need the extra volume of water either.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have been using a CamelBak for years and so do most of my riding pals. They are great for storing the tools on your list, also not have to reach down and grab your water bottle is awesome, just take a pull from the hose.

Instead of a full size backpack, consider a small hip pack. I have the Evoc 1L hip pack and it's a great alternative to my larger Camelbak. Just big enough to carry the essentials.

Your tools shouldn't rattle as much in a hip pack as they do in an under seat bag, but if you're still getting rattle wrap them in a thicker fabric like a felt.

I second the hip packs. I have a CamelBak backpack and will only use it for long long long rides. Otherwise I'm in love with my Osprey hip pack. I have the one with a water bladder but don't use the bladder that often. I just put my water bottle inside the pack (my bike doesn't fit a bottle cage). All your items will fit in the hip pack.

I have the Seral model. The Savu is the non bladder one.

I wear a small camelback backpack. It’s never bothered me and gives a little protection on the spine if you ever go all the way over. It’s narrower than my back and has a pretty well vented shape so not terribly sweaty either.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'm on the prowl for a bag/sack/satchel/carrier at some level.

The weather looks great! The trees haven't bloomed yet in NY.

I've been busy swapping parts between bikes and TLC on the new downhill bike. I was having trouble tuning the low speed screw on the derailleur and aligning the derailleur with the lowest gear. After some difficulties I realized there's a 7-sp cassette with a 10-sp derailleur/shifter. I texted the previous owner and he tells me "the guy I bought it from said it just needs to be tuned". Eh ok.. Fortunately the original 10-sp SRAM cassette was only $57 on amazon and delivered next day.

Did a little 5mi ride this afternoon. Weather was nice, trail was sneaking up on too muddy to ride. Few spots were in rough shape. Couple cool creek crossings though.

I need to clean and adjust the chain. Getting some bad noises when I'm in my largest cog in back. Also need to take some tension out of my clips and oil them up. Feet were "stuck" in the pedals a few times.

Overall a decent way to spend 90min or so.

Those tiny riding gloves on the little one are great! I’ve got to get some of those for mine.

I’m jealous. My wife has been riding with me exactly once.
Woom brand for the gloves. They are nice.

To be fair, I ride way more with the girls but without wifey. She's not big into it. But we recently got her a bike and it made a huge difference. Not just borrowing my second bike but one she can call her own. She named it Loki (it's green).

Opening weekend at the bike park. The new-to-me bike is great! I had 2 people comment how nice it is which is kind of cool being that it's a 5 year old bike. But seems like the bottom bracket is making some noise. No play tho, so i'm hoping it just needs a clean and grease.

Got the oldest his first Mountain bike. He's been asking to go riding and his Trek Precalibre was much too small for him. Not sure if he's going to like teh hobby, so we didn't spend a ton of money.

Picked up a Trek Marlin 4 with 27.5 wheels and an XS frame size. He's a touch small for it overall, but should grow into it quickly.

I haven't ridden in a few months. Found out I had a ruptured disc in my neck and have been trying to rest. Rode around the block the other day with the kiddo and the new bike and didn't have any pain. Going to try an easy trail next week and see if I'm up for it. I've lost ALL my conditioning this year, and have gained some weight. Not being able to ride sucks!

Sorry for the injury. More kids on bikes! I've started a semi-regular kids group ride with our local MTB chapter
