One AT&T tower 25 miles SW and one Verizon tower 25 miles NE.

Thats why I say we should agree on a known entity ahead of time. Of course we can move the location after the group congregates.

Looking at the contour map, you can see that much of the Broken Bow shoreline has steep dropoffs (heavy black lines). The coves on the SE end are easy to find heading east out of the marina and I know there are spots for shallow anchoring and standing.

I am good for whatever the group would like to do.

@PEARCE I would still like to explore some on Friday since I have never been to Broken Bow.

Are there really no sandy beaches at all? That will be a change for me!

I will be exploring around on Friday too. I just know that we can't count on cell coverage to convey meeting spots. Its a deep lake. They even have a spot where Okies do cliff jumping. Scenery and water is great all over and worth exploring. But for a gathering meet spot I think its good to be able to anchor and stand in shallow water.

My loose plan is to explore around on Friday, and end up anchoring in the area I proposed to listen to tunes and watch the sunset to the west.

One factor might be when we think the bulk of people will get there? We could all meet Friday night and pick a different location for Saturday. But that only works if most of the people are there Friday night. If many people won't make it til saturday, then the meet-point should be a pre-existing location.

My plan is to leave Dallas Friday around lunchtime and get to Broken Bow late afternoon and be in the water from late afternoon until sunset. Then Saturday on the lake all day.

Since cell coverage will be spotty we can use VHF and/or FRS as a backup. I have both.

Also @Detonate has a tall flagpole for his boat. Hopefully he'll bring that as a good way to find the group

Mark, pick a location that is on a southern shore, so the prevailing winds won't blow us around so much. With a deep lake, the bow anchor is going to be very deep...and I don't have my shore spike yet! I am more into floating that standing around on a rock and mud bottom lake, but we will make do, or just anchor deeper and float! I take it that it is a clear lake?

Clara doesn't get off work until 5pm and that could go longer depending on any emergencies she has. We will leave when she gets home and changed. From our house, we are looking at about a 3 hour and 10 minute drive I think, depending on terrain and speed. So we won't make the "captain's meeting" Friday night. And we have to leave pretty early on Sunday due to work. So Friday night, we may make the late cocktail hour, Saturday we are game for the gathering on the lake and whatever we all decide for any evening entertainment. I am making Guac and will bring chips for that to share, but I have no idea about dinner, or the accommodations capability, and since we are only there such a short time, I don't know whether to do something simple or otherwise. I am guessing being on the lake all day and no way to go back to the cabin, means having to gear up for all day out.

How many of us have VHF radios?

Lets pick a channel for our group to communicate on.

I am also an inland lakes boater and I have handheld VHF and handheld GMRS. Nothing special, but good for when cell phones aren't good. They also have built-in weather radio which can be handy.

Channel 9 is considered to be the general calling channel. Chanel 16 is also a calling channel but mostly for distress and/or safety, not for finding friends. Marinas (and Tow Boat US) typically monitor Channel 16

The point I was trying to make with the location I circled is those coves are the only ones I know that do not have steep rocky drop-offs. They are relatively flat for anchoring and standing on flat bottom. Its not sand, but its not mud either. Its more like small pebbles and/or firm soil. They are mostly northern shores on southern coves, but there is some flexibility depending on wind. I don't expect a lot of wind in late July. I also like that area because Its fairly easy to find when leaving the marina and then find the specific location where the group finally settles.

I'm basing this all on my previous exploration of the area, not just satellite pictures or navionics maps.

If you start adding fun toys to your stock boat you may find that you enjoy mods almost as much as owning a boat.

Sounds like @maboat knows the lake. I suggest he pick the location.

We should be there sometime Friday afternoon.

I've only been there twice and only once by boat. @PEARCE goes there several times a year, so he probably knows it the best. But I did explore the lakea quite extensively when I was there. There are lots of great spots around the lake for scenery and deep water to explore but they are not necessarily great for anchoring get-togethers. My picks for a meet-point are based on relatively flat, shallow coves that are easy to reach coming from the Marina.

The first picture is high-level to get your bearings on the general area. The second picture is a closer view of the area I suggest. I numbered spots 1,2,3 because its hard to pick an exact location depending on the conditions at the time and any other boaters that may be there. I know @txav8r asked for a southern shore because of prevailing winds, but I don't know of a cove on Broken Bow with southern shore that isn't rocky and steep. I don't expect much wind in late July, but the cove in location #1 curves around and has some southern shore if wind/waves are an issue.

@maboat what about the opposite side of the peninsula from #1? That southern wall there is shallow toward the east end of that peninsula, and it provides protection. Both 1, 2, and 3 get some good protection if the winds are SSE as they are in this part of the country. With the terrain up there in OK, I don't know if it is much of an issue and true, dead of summer is less prone to wind, but I do remember several occasions on Texoma the first weekend of August, where we got beat to death.

I also think that what people like to do in terms of beaching is varied. I noticed from that time on RR, that you liked a shallow ended cove, and you may remember that I like a steep wall on a fresh channel. My reasoning is the water is changed due to movement off a main channel, and is ALWAYS cooler than the more stagnant water in the end of a cove where it is shallow. We always anchor in 20'-30' of water and float. Texoma is the only lake that we go to that we get on the beach and anchor where we come and go from the water, to the boat, to the shore. Up at Shelbyville, they seem to raft all the boats together due to lack of shore also. I am somewhat concerned that someone might get cut or hurt on the rocky bottom as well...but I am ALWAYS concerned on Texoma about someone stepping on a can or broken bottle and cutting themselves. So it is all relative. Also, what you do when in your single boat is just different that what you need to consider when getting numbers of boats together. And in terms of that, the wind, no matter how minimal, makes getting the boats close together more difficult, without using multiple anchors on each boat. So the raft up becomes more of a player or you have to accommodate the swing more. You guys that did PK may have more input with this too, because it would be similar to Hells Gate when you were over there, I think.

I am good with whatever you guys want to do. And being close to the marina is IMPORTANT I think. Without phone coverage or capability, just pick a place and we go with it and make due. If the north side of the peninsula from #1 isn't a player, I think the most protection is in #1 if the wind is a player. Even if you just say, it will be one of the three, that is close enough, we can find it. I won't get Friday to cruise the lake, so we will do a little sight seeing on Saturday at some point too.

I am glad some of you have been here and know the lay of the land. It looks like a beautiful lake and a great place to stay longer...and to RV if you had one.

I have an RV - but dang! It is far to drive for 2 nights. Cheaper to buy 2 nights cabin than to pull the 5th wheel and pay the RV spot for just 2 nights.

I question a 7 hour round trip tow for one day on the water too Travis...but I am coming:winkingthumbsup" What is the gas increase to pull both your boat and the RV? Cancel two cabins, split the cost of the fuel for the pull with you, and rock and roll! lol
