The 2007 Stereo Head Unit opening is not DIN sized, it is too large

The factory stereo head unit in my SX230 was corroding internally so I decided to upgrade it.

I ordered a Fusion IP600G but when I started to install it I found that the factory opening for the stereo was much larger than a standard DIN stereo opening. I removed the panel above the stereo for easy access.

I contacted Will at JetBoatPilot.com with dimensions of the opening and he was able to cut a piece of HDPE to the correct size with a DIN opening. I used a drill press to drill holes to match those from the factory stereo mounting and countersink them.

Then I was able to install my new stereo.

As well as solving the issues with the factory stereo, the Fusion provided a huge upgrade in sound quality!

Bruce - if you talk to Will, you might suggest he make a few of those and stock them. I'd buy one immediately - that is one of the prime reasons I have not upgraded my stereo yet...didn't want to deal with figuring out how to make something custom for the opening.

@leeatmg, Will has the dimensions and is prepared to make them. The mounting holes from the dimensions I had sent him did not line up perfectly. I drilled them out to 3/16 for a little wiggle room and the countersunk portion to 3/8. I also drilled 1/8 holes to mount the fusion head unit. The mount is extremely sturdy.

If I was doing it again, I would have Will cut the plate without any screw holes. Then I would mark and drill shallow holes in the back of the plate and use screws from behind to mount the plate to the dash so that they would not be visible.

Give him a call and tell him you want a copy of the mounting plate he made for me.

The IP600G is awesome. It is 2 ohm stable and has a more powerful amp than most. Last year I set it up to run four 6x9s in parallel providing a two ohm load on two of the channels. As part of my spring mods, I will be hooking up four more 6x9s on the other two channels. This provides an amazing amount of volume with great sound quality for very little battery drain. The head unit has a solid plastic case. It is so much better built than stock unit. The internal iPhone and iPod dock works well for 4th generation and older devices. So you could repurpose an old iPhone or iPad as a music library for the boat. I also have the remote control installed on the swim deck and Fusions bluetooth module installed.

I will work on a stereo upgrade writeup with more info later today.

I upgraded everything else two years ago to JL speakers and a 6 channel JL amp. I replaced the four stock speakers with JL speakers, using four of the six channels. I plan to bridge the last two channels for a sub in the future, and then run a new pair of swim deck speakers off the head unit amp with a switch so I can shut the swim deck on and off at will. I have been looking hard at that specific model, and this may be the year. I look forward to your review!

I upgraded mine to a Kenwood and it bolted right in using the flip up cover and housing from the original head unit. You can use any standard size head unit but you need to retain the original housing.

That is true. My Fusion head unit has an oversize face.
