Very few rules on our boat:
  1. Have fun!
  2. No whining
  3. Spray sunscreen on the swim deck only
  4. Hold on to your stuff or put it away or see #2 if it blows out! LOL
  5. Did I mention .... have fun!
Whenever someone shows up late, they usually call or text and as someone else said....we just go for a swim or drink while we wait. As for food....bring whatever you want. Beer bottles go in koozies....

I just about banned my sister and her family this past weekend. They joined us on our boat for the first time ever. I lauched the boat and told them to wait before boarding. I went to the stern and opened the engine hatch. I turned around and they were climbing in wearing their shoes standing on the bow cushions. While I was very annoyed, it was nothing until I noticed they had all stepped in the geese droppings on the dock. Goose crap all over the seat.

The conversation went something like this...

Me- what the hell!?
Sister - what?
Me- I told you to wait!
Sister - why?
Me- your shoes are on!
Sister- so?
Me- there is bird shit on you shoes and now all over the seats!!!
Sister- (sarcastic) sorry
Me- give me the keys to your Cayenne and see how you like it on your seats!
Me- you had to step in the seats?
Sister-how else do we get in?
Me-again!!! Wait!!! Christ!!!

I could see this happening with my sister-in-law....except there would be screaming lots of cursing and her being kicked into the water....I'm glad we live across the country from her. Just to give a small example of the person she is, she told my pregnant wife (her sister) "I hope that baby chokes on the umbilical cord". If her boyfriend and Dad weren't already holding her by the throat and throwing her out the front door I probably would have killed her.

whew!!! this thread grew quickly.... Now that I've read it all, Ill start here:

I'll see your wife's friend, and raise you my wife's sister.

She decided to get sh*t faced while out on the boat and passed out. Then later, right before we got back to the dock she puked all over the starboard aft hull... in front of my son. ..... So I threw her over my shoulder, put her into the truck and advised my kid that because she couldn't control herself his aunt needed to be babysat by a 10 y/o.

So far she's the only one to not be invited back. Mostly because I'm like @Glassman - I don't care to invite people out. Usually I prefer to meet other friends who have their boats out.... or even better, since I bought the boat for us - usually its just us.

As for cleaning the wife is WAAAY more retentive than I am - so no worries there.

That being said - gets me to my second point:

I'm going to call BS on this one. I don't wait. Unless I get a call with a really good reason (in which case we'll come back for you) you are pretty much left. That's on you. Unless your wife literally had you by the gonads I don't see how you had to wait. Sorry bud but YOU decided to be nice - and you were rewarded with her disrespectfully bringing a red drink again. If she's your wife's friend that's fine but she's not yours - I never hesitate to be the "designated" a**hole when the need arises.

Rules are: Just be respectful - you show no respect you don't get invited back... that simple.
You are right about waiting. It was my choice because I don't want to be a complete A-Hole. But as soon as they got there I told her this is her one late chance and I will not wait for her again.

You guys have such complex sets of rules. I really don't know how you get people to follow them. Half the time I have to yell at my passengers to stay seated while docking. It never fails, I explain that my wife and I know what we're doing and here are my rules for docking:

1) We need to keep a clear path from bow to stern,
2) Remain seated to balance the weight of the boat (and for rule 1),
3) If I need your help, I will explain, in detail, what I need you to do ahead of time (unless it's an emergency of course).
4) REMAIN SEATED GOSH DANGIT!!!

Sure as sh*t, the women try to start gathering their crap and the men think they can help....somehow. I have to yell at my father every single freakin time to sit down and shut up. Albeit, the reversal of me scolding my parent is somewhat enjoyable.....

Sounds like you need to hire a Float Attendant to give safety briefings before departure and again prior to arrival at your destination!

It wouldn't help...passengers don't listen to safety briefings!

Why is it that folks feel a need to step on the seats. Makes me crazy.

That's because our boats don't have a designated "walk aboard" area. Soo... the seats just make a nice step. When we have guest I put a towel out for them to step onto.

That is part of the reason I load everyone in the boat while it's still in the trailer in the parking lot. Sarah backs the boat & trailer down the ramp amd we take off and I she is the only person that needs to board at the dock. Unloading is the same but in reverse.

We tried that @T. Turner - but then they kept wanting to help and just got into the way.

Now I have any visitors stay on the dock and watch from a distance while the family and I launch the boat.
I back down the ramp, jump into the boat. Wife releases the bow winch/chain and I start the boat. The kid holds onto the lines and the wife pulls the boat away.
If we're not in a rush I let others join then (once the boat is secured). If there are other boaters waiting on the ramp I will pull away and join my visitors at the adjacent dock that we have out our launch site.

@Bennie I agree, that from a launching perspective, that's a great way to go. My boat is at a marina and we tend to go to waterside restaurants for lunch, so I deal with this leaving my marina, docking at a restaurant, leaving a restaurant, and returning to the home marina. Somewhere during the day, my initial "in boat" address gets lost. I'm starting to think it might be the food at the restaurants.

AMEN to that @Shuck Water !!!

That "first in" safety address seems to only last for the "first in".... and I am applying this directly to my child.
(and in full disclosure... myself at times)

For us there is nothing to help with because i dont dockvthe boat at all when picking Sarah ip or dropping her off. I just idle up to the dock nose first and she steps on or off and then I back out anf we are on our way or go wait for her to back the trailer up.
But i can totally see how people would get in the way if you were trying actually docking the boat, and loading / unloading.
