Looking for a family jet boat. Probably a Scarab or Yamaha...not sure which is better. Would love a 255 scarab impulse but probably out pf my price range....had traditional boats but looking at these for performance and safety. Any suggestions or good deals please let me know. Would like something under warrenty. Thanks Jeff

can you provide a little bit more info around what you are looking for? Most importantly what are you planing on doing with the boat...
If you need to go on cove and send the whole day anchored is one thing and if you want to go to Bimini with your boat is another thing.

I would keep an eye on the classified as the season is about to end and people will start listing boats for sale.

One last thing to keep in mind is that if you post your location; most likely another member in the area will go with you to check a potential boat that you like.

Great points thanks for the info. I am located in SAn Antonio, Texas area. Willing to drive some. Wife want some luxuries, I want some speed and performance. Looked at the 242 online and also the 212 from Yamaha. I also like the 255 from scarab and also the 215 which I found one for sale in Houston, Tx, that was an impulse with supposed improvements stating the original price was 65k. Not in a hurry and want to make sure I get something that fits because stretching the budget for a boat. Thanks, Jeff

I would advise to read the threads here on any boat u want to purchase.. there are boat specific threads. Educate yourself on any model or make u r interested in... THEN go look at them... if u know the good and the bad of each one its harder to fall in love and make an emotional buy on a boat that will not suit your needs.

This phrase sets off alarm bells with me so I'll advise that you be VERY careful here. Make sure you understand the annual cost of operation and maintenance. Unexpected expenses can lead to frustration. Unexpected damage or equipment failures can lead to SEASONS of your boat sitting in storage while you try to save up enough money to repair it.

Certainly not trying to dissuade you from a purchase, just make sure you understand what you are getting in to. Even done with wisdom and prudence, a boat is still "A hole in the water surrounded by fiberglass into which you throw money." There is no way that even a cheapskate like me can escape that.

If you're sure you're ready for this, I'll give you the same advice I always do: Watch BoatTrader.com and/or any other classifieds for a few months. Sit on your wallet (bad for your back by the way) and just watch. After 2 months of this you'll be able to judge the reasonable price of any used boat - jet or otherwise. You'll also realize that you don't NEED that one particular gem you've got your eye on. Another one will be along in a week or two - and it will probably be better. (As my buddy always says when car-shopping, "They pounded out thousands of those things, we'll find another one.")

Once you've achieve that business-like mindset start shopping for real.

It seems tedious and time consuming at first, but once you "get into it" boat-shopping is pretty fun in and of itself. Plus, the better you get at it, the better deal you'll find.

@Jmajka it kind of sound like you are where I was last last October and your wife definitely seems to be in sign with my wife. LOL

@biglar155 is right, unless you owned a boat before, you don't realize how expensive the maintenance can be.

Anyway, I will try to put together a quick summary of how we ended up buying a boat, with the hope it might help you with your decision.

what I like the most so far, is that you are not in rush. If you can restrain yourself and not rush to buying a boat. I am positive you will find something you will be happy for more than the first few days.

Not rushing at all been looking for last month or two but trying to make a well educated purchase. I am not saying I am broke but on the other hand I need to put money away into savings, 401k, college fund and don't want to jeapordize my families future. I work on most things myself including car which I have built a couple, tractor, yard equipment, zero turn and most mechanical things. Don't know much about the jet boats but learning and trying to get up to speed. Our off season is almost here, and figured not a bad time to shop around, do research which I like to learn new things and having this great resource (this site) definanitly helps! Will just see what happens worse case scenario I can wait even till next off season to find exactly what I want at the price I want, meanwhile can keep saving and researching. Big purchases take time and are best if you take that time! Looking into cost of ownership is also important if I have a good idea than obviously I can make a much more informed desicion on what meets the goals meshed with what meets the family financial needs. When I stated punching the budget that was spending money. Will see what happens and what deals I find. Thanks for the information and keep it coming. Great to hear experiences and things other looked at prior to getting a boat. For safety reason I would really prefer to stay away from props though, I know I could get one cheaper but safety is very important to me and the family!

@Lpennington I have actually posted 3 details word documents about my experience with the boat. They all are on the first post of this thread.

For what is worth, here is what I send to Jeff this afternoon.

Hi Jeff,

it kind of sounded to me that you and wife said, " let have a boat". That is kind of we did but we were very specific on what to do with it.

I always wanted to go to the Bahamas and I have been thinking to buy a sail boat or trawler to do that. Last October I found out that Jetboaders.net organizes an annual trip to Bimini on jet boats. So I was hooked. I did some research and it looked like Yahama jet boats are the ones with the lowest cost of maintenance. My wife liked a lot the fact that there is no propeller at the back . It is safer for the her, and the kids ( 4&6). For going to BImini which was our #1 priority the bigger the boat the better. SO I was looking for 24 footer. I came across a very good opportunity on a 2012 SX240 for $35K and I bought it. Our boat was in very good shape and had less than 27 hours on the engines. Needless to say, it was a an easy choice for us. The problems started after buying the boat though. The boat itself had a lot of upgrades, but I owned a honda pilot and everyone was telling me that a Pilot cannot pull 24feet of fiberglass. So I had trade in a 4 month old Honda Pilot for an F150. Tehn the boat could not feet out our garage. This meant that I had to keep in the backyard and raise the fence to 8 feet. Given that it is eally tight turn for our driveway, I had to buy a power dolly ( $2k). Long story short, I had to spend another 10K, just to be able to tow and store the boat.
then it came BImini preparation. Although my boat had lot of upgrades, it did not things needed for going to open seas. So here comes another 3-4 thousands. Then we went to Bimini and ended up passing through a storm, so we got some damage on the boat. I have not taken the boat in yet, but I am expecting about 1 to 2 thousands. So basically buying a boat is like a car that you buy it and then for the next 3-5 years is pretty much maintenance free. Typically people spend 10% to 20% of the boats value in upgrades.

My wife and I dont do any water sports because the kids are young, but if you are planing to do some, then that will be an extra cost in towers and other equipment.
An old man once told me. the problem with a boat is not buying, but maintaining it. So please keep that in mind.

Now in terms of what boat to buy.......
My research has shown that for small family ( couple+ 2 young kids) an AR190 is the best bang for your buck. You can tow, you can maintain 40 mph, get very good MPG, fit it any garage, and you can tow it with Honda Pilot or any other midsize SUVs. If you had to cross to Bimini, it can do it but it will be a bit rough. All this with less than $40K.

On the negative side, if you put 8 people on it and provisions, it does not move very fast. If I had not found that sx240, I would have most likely gotten either an SX190 or AR190. The exposure is small in case you decide that boating is not for you.

I, personally, am not so sure about the 21 footers. The only advantage a 21 footer has over 19 foot is the extra engine and hence power. But it is still problem for the gager and towing as it is taller and wider than a 19footer. So at the end of the day, you will need a real truck or SUV. if so I might as well get the 24 footer.

If I were in your shoes I will do the following.
I will arrange to spend a few days driving a few different boats and see what you like and you don't from each of them. If you guys where to drive up here in Dallas, I will be glad to go the lake with you for the whole day so can see how you like it. The closest member that I know with Scaraab is in Houston and I think Rick will be glad to show you his boat.
I have a Yamaha, but I have to admit that the Scarabs look way way better. I care more about the boat being reliable though than looking great.
Now if you are looking at the 240 limited etc, then you can start looking at other brands, especially if luxury is a big thing about your guys. My opinion, is that as soon as you get into boating, you realize that there is no ceiling. So for my is all about functionality that luxury. When I cross 60 of open seas for BImini, I would rather be in very good functional boat than a luxurious boat. The only time anyone is looking at your boat is at the ramp and when you are in cove or something. When you are fighting the 4-5 foot waves, nobody gives a shit how cool you look. They only care to make it without damage on their boats.

Just as you said, be patience, boat will come up for sale. After the Bimini trip, we even thought about selling our boat, but eventually decided to keep it. We would have lost 15k on it in one year, so might as well keep it for some time and have a good time.

Anyway, I hope this help. If you want to come up or have a question on cost please let me know. I keep a very detailed spreadsheet with all the coast.

Cheers,
betik

My two cents after countless hours researching - There is a weird age range in which it didn't make any sense at all to by used, 1-3 years old I found. In my mind I could by 2-3 years old and very smartly avoid initial depreciation... but what I found is for very small bump up I was able to negotiate to a brand new unit.
For example - boatrader shows the least priced SX192 as around 25k (entire country, yes there could be cheaper but as an example). The best out the door price I have confirmed on an SX195 was $30k on the nose (3 dealer actually).

So factor in 3yr warranty and 2.99% from Yami , and the new is the deal to get.

Anyway, just my findings. I cant confirm this applies to the 230+ size boats though.

Very good point. Some with the larger dealer incentives and than the low interest rates would definitely be high on my list. Just doing more research while I wait for the right boat to come along at the right price obviously. Leaning toward a 242 limited s preferably 2015 or newer for a couple reasons. The features, the non supercharged motors seem more reliable and also really like the idea of the clean outs on the yamahas. Not set in stone yet but that is the direction I am leaning. The only downside is the discounts are less than some other brands...i.e. Scarab. But think the 18s are out already for them. Please chime in if I missed or overlooked something.

Whats funny is I found some dealers wanted full MSRP and $2000 prep because "These are selling like hot cakes"... and yet I had 3 dealers that readily would accept 3-4k off, and waive prep and doc fee. There is quite a range when shopping, its actually comical.

EDIT -- LOL just got a call from a sales guy in TN regarding quote I sent in on Friday morning, $35299+$2599 prep/freight on the AR195, and to let him know fast because he has multiple parties interested.

Wow. The difference in various markets is staggering

I have seen a lot of that when calling...not so much on the scarabs but on the Yamahas definitely.

My dealer in San Antonio TX want full price for a 2016 Scarab. The 18s are out or being advertised so that cracks me up. Right around here no one is discount no matter the year or season. Hence I realize and have no problem traveling a distance for a boat.

@tomeygun i have never seen 4K off a Yamaha. Removing prep and docs yes especially for older models, but not more than $500 of MSRP of a current model.

I believe the 2015+ on the 240 have hinged seats, context, and 6 extra inches of freeboard. Apparently the free board. Important when you are in the ocean, LOL

Word on the street is that next might be a 26 footer......

I have seen a 2017 242 limited S for just below 57k. I looked at the 212 limited S and they are 53k. Trying to find the differences with the AR240s and a side by side comparison. From everything I read you want the 2015 and up...not totally sure why I know they did some insulating to the engine area. 26 footer would be awesome but I don't want to spend 57k on a 24 footer. Can't imagine what the 26 would cost! Seems like my price range puts me in the 2012-2014 area for the 242s limited S. Have to try to find a side by side comparison for the AR240s. I know it doesn't have rear speakers on the swim platform and probably no radio controls either. Will have to dig more
