Hi Guys. I replaced the bolts on both the oil coolers. Then I changed the oil filters and the oil in both the engines and fired them up one by one. The port side engine is good. No oil leaks even after 5 minutes of continuous running. However the starboard side engine started leaking oil after one minute. I shut down the engine and examined the oil cooler. There are no leaks in the oil cooler. Everything looks good. The oil seems to be leaking from the bottom of the engine.

My question is... Will putting in more replacement oil in the engine than removing the oil from the engine cause this to happen ? I suspect I might have put in more oil in the engine. What other cases can I check for? I cannot detect any oil leak from the oil cooler and I used a tissue paper and ran it all across the oil cooler and oil filter ( both at the bolts and the complete border of the oil cooler) to see if there is a leak there.

Thanks
Amar
I think I remember that if you over fill the oil, one place that would be effected is the air filter. You may check that first to see if there is oil on it. Someone correct me if my line of remembering is wrong!

if you overfilled the oil it would come out the air filter, but that would be a lot of oil, what does your dipstick level show?

first guess would be residual oil left over from the change dripping off, then I would suspect the oil filter is leaking at the base,

check the dipstick, clean it up and run it again for a few minutes to see if it continues,

I took a video of the issue. Seems like it is coming from the orange O rings. I might not have put them in properly. Will remove the cooler and see if putting it in properly will do the trick. Else will order the O rings and replace them.

@Amar Nanduri if the O rings are not expensive, I would order new ones. You could have pinch it and if I were in your shoes I would want a peace of mind.
Remember that those o rigns will be going to Bimini in 10 months and you need to have a peace of mind.

It takes more than a week for new ones to come. Don't wanna lose some boating this Sunday. But you are right Betik. I will order new rings also and do a complete replacement before start of next season.

Hi @Julian I did not find the sheared heads which is odd. Had one of my good friend help me in removing the oil coolers , unscrew everything and then he used drill bits (right hand and left hand) to unscrew them out. Then we washed the oil coolers with wd40 , put in new gaskets , O rings and cylinders the rings go on and bolted the coolers back.

Guys. I replaced with older O ring cylinder and same issue happened. I removed the oil cooler again and same spot O ring broke again. Am I over tightening the bolt ?

torque on the three mounting bolts is 18 N-m, or 13.3ft-lb.

Tried again and same result. That's 3 times in a row I broke the O ring. I did not tighten the bolt too much, just enough to easily open it. First 2 times I put the cylinders with the O rings in the cooler and then bolted the cooler to the engine. Third time I put the cylinders in the engine block, made sure the O rings are not damaged and then bolted the cooler to the engine block. In all 3 cases same issue with the O ring. I felt around the engine cylinder with my pinkie finger to see if there is anything sharp and it is smooth. Need to do more research on this. I guess no boating this weekend for me.... Will spend time on research

I wouldn't think overtightening the bolts would do that, looks to me like they are rolling up out of the grove when inserted. Did you put some oil on them before assembling to make them slide into the hole easier? Or are they too loose and not staying in the grove?

Are those genuine Yamaha O-rings? I removed and reinstalled mine a few months ago and didn't have an issue. But the engine was out of the boat.

Yes I applied oil on them before assembling . They are a snug fit .

Those are genuine Yamaha O rings. Let me explain. I bought new cylinders and O rings from Yamaha and replaced the original ones. It is the bottom number 12 in the picture that is getting cut all the time. It is the exact same O ring getting cut at the exact point at almost exact same width.

If the leak isn't bad I would not let it stop me from boating over the weekend but part of it is because I don't live in a year round boating location, just wouldn't turn the bilge on.

The heads to the broken bolts may have found their way to the bilge area under the clean out tray.

Would cooling the o rings down once installed on the cylinders (by putting them in the fridge or freezer a few minutes) prevent them from breaking when installed in the coolers? I assume that they break during not after install.

I figured you had it all correct, it's weird it gets cut in the same place each time.

It is driving me nuts that everything else looks good but this one thing. I do not want to spend 700 for a new cooler :D . Ordered more O rings. Will give it a shot next week when the rings arrive and hope at least one ring will hold on without breaking.

is there enough room to put you finger and see if there is anything sharp?

Yes Betik. I used my pinkie finger to feel around the cylinder where the O ring goes. It seems to be okay. Will do another attempt today. I will keep you updated.
