Steering Free Play

Recently purchased a 2017 190 FSH Deluxe and have noticed 10 degrees or less of free play on steering in either direction. Wondering if this is normal and or can it be adjusted. Asking as I use to own a 2002 Seadoo 1800 Challenger and its steering did not have a noticeable free play.

I've noticed a similar characteristic on mine. It's mostly noticeable at lower speeds and I think it's inherent in the stock system. However, when it's high and dry, and I have someone watch the inputs on the nozzle from turning the helm, the nozzle does move instantly. After I added aftermarket thrust vector fins I did notice the turning became more responsive, but I still feel like I'm always trying to compensate a little when going slow. Its like the input on the helm takes time to respond, and by that time, I've over-corrected to make up for it. You may want to look at the Thrust Vector or the Cobra Jet.

New FSH owner here also and the steering feels like 'suggested steering" like back in my 4x4 days when you were in very muddy conditions. I plan on adding the Thrust Vector in the spring. I also get the sense that this will just take time to get used to like anything else. Compared to our last small boat with a 40hp yamaha this feels very drifty.

TV will make the steering wonder way better.
I had mine without them for a year and once i installed them it made such a difference, i can now give the steering to someone else when driving at lower speeds.

There absolutely is a lot of free play in the stock steering system. Mine "bumps" back in forth at slow speeds. I can hold the steering wheel and have a friend move the jet probably 15 degrees. With that said the stock steering system is not adjustable. I tried.

have you check the locking nuts on the cable behind the steering wheel? I had mine back off and it created a lot of slop,

Be sure the bolts on the steering box are tight this seems to be why the wheel gets free play.
