Needs to be quantified Saltwater Vs. Fresh, Fishing Vs. Chartplotting, Aesthetics Vs. Function......not as easy as just picking a brand or model

I personally would just like to know the most popular brand as that at least to me would be an indication of their reliability (I know it is an assumption on my part however I would be willing to live with that). I also would not want to make any poll overly complicated as IMO it does not always leave to better results. [flag]

Salt Vs. Fresh is at a minimum required.

Freshwater = Lowrance & Hummingbird....to a lesser extent Garmin

Saltwater = Raymarine, Simrad, Furuno, Garmin

I use humminbird in saltwater. I know 2 commercial charter boats that use it also so its not set in stone. Out of the box humminbird is good for maybe 200' depth but they do have optional transducers for deeper water. Raymaine does have nice options for Flir cameras and other add-ons for offshore fishing. I think what Clemson is talking about is deep offshore fishing but I don't think a lot of people on this forum are taking their boats 100 miles offshore. Just my thoughts. I'm sure i'll be proven wrong.

I went with the Simrad GO 7 XSR because I liked the Simrad's touch screen and ease of use. I went with the XSR because it comes with Navionics plus maps which I found to have a lot of recommendations on this site.

@subysti @Hector @bronze_10 Im curious as to what maps come with the GO 7 as I the one I am looking at says it has the Basemap. My question is how do you like the maps that came with yours. I will be boating mostly around Ocean city Md and some times on the eastern shore of the Ccheseapeake.
thanks

Go7 here as well. Base maps were surprisingly good, but I picked up navionics as well (was on sale with mail-in rebate)

I picked up the navionics platinum . It’s pretty BA with the satellite overlay.

I couldn’t tell you what basemaps look like since I never used them. The other plus is that it’s wifi. If you have the navionics app on your phone you can send a route wireless to the sinrad go7

The GO 7 XSE comes with Insight and the XSR comes with Navionics + USA. I would recommend buying a gold or platinum chart card either way.

@Liveto99 Jealous, I depend heavily on my GO7 XSR but would love to have a GO9. Hmm, maybe I will just spring for a radar this year instead

Just to follow up, I was incorrect. The XSR was "supposed to" come with Navionics plus but the one I purchased last year did not. It was the same price as the XSE though.

I think a benefit of the Garman is that it will make routes for you.

We do not yet have a chartplotter on the Yamaha. However we do have a Raymarine Axiom 9RV on the Beneteau. It has a thru hull "Real Vision" transducer mounted forward on the hull. The detail from the RV-200 transducer is more than what is needed for a sailboat, but I like pictures of what is under me, not just a number.
