I would think that any hard bunk will have this same issue. Even if you clean off the boat, road grime would likely cause the same issue.

This is one of the threads on Ultimate Bunk Boards:

I just changed the carpet to synthetic. The carpets were full of sand and debride. Not sure how it got there but can't be good for the gel coat

please keep an close eye to your hull. If your "collecting" sand the synthetic material might make it worse.

@Betik that is a great vid and an interesting perspective on loading. Thanks! I totally get the concept and easily see how the extra length and flex gently persuades the boat to center versus the usual bump when we are left or right of center. The gel and glass in the “impact zone” will be under much less stress with that setup. You should be able to increase approach speeds by two knots easy (lol). “I’m comin’ in hot!”

The three feet does seem a little long to be unsupported. It’s hard to monitor the boards’ condition all covered up, so I do wonder if it will ever get to a point of breaking off on you. If it does, a razor blade to the carpet is probably all you will need to remove it since that part is not carrying any load.

yes they are 2x6 by 8 feet. I was worried about it myself and that was one of the reasons why I wanted to record it and see how the bend while the boat is loading.
I am planing on leaving it is for a while and see how t goes. It they brake, I will provide some minimal support. I really like the way they flex.

On my old trailer, there was a " jerkiness " when the hull will engage the bunks and center. Today it was so smooth that I could not believe it. Maybe I just got lucky to centering the boat, but we will see on tomorrow when I load the boat again ....
Now that you've had this setup for a while, do you have any updates, and would you recommend this? Thus far, every trailer modification I've applied (after reading about it here) has made it easier and safer to load up, and your mod has me intrigued.

I accidentally did this to my trailer too when swapping out the bunks. Actually I did 2x6x10ft, and it has worked out well. I split the difference on the bunks and it has worked out great.

not really. I still like it A LOT. As matter of fact a couple of months ago, I even took off the guide posts.

In regard to the some concern about the wood snapping, not signs of anything rotting or anything like that.

PS. I will put a post up in a couple of months, but adding a second set of disk brakes made a huge difference when breaking. Something to keep in mind if you are towing long distances.
