So here is how it looked today at 4 pm . Not a good thing. I tried to get pictures of the water color waiting for the sun to shine on it so you can see it looks like tea. The last picture was of the Fort Desoto boat ramp believe it or not. Only 2 trailers and one car.

And the storm did exactly what I was worried it would do.
It was confirmed that the wind pushed the red tide back to shore .

Went out today and I tried to take a few pictures of fish floating all over and the water , I noticed the color of the water was twice as dark on the east side of the skyway causeway than it was on the west side telling me Tampa bay is probably worse than the gulf area for red tide. The top pictures were taken behind shell island pointing the camera straight down at the water the color was really more brown than green so not sure why they came out green but it was very dark and only a foot deep where I stopped. the last 2 pictures the sky was reflecting off the water but the water was very tan actually and all the white spots are dead fish floating .

Todays update on the red tide I went and looked at the water it did not appear to be as bad or dark as a few days ago nor was the smell as strong.
The official report is as follows.

(Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.)

Current Conditions
Bloom concentrations of the Florida red tide organism, Karenia brevis, persist on Florida’s Southwest, Northwest, and East coasts. Patchiness was observed in each region. Additional details are provided below.

  • Over the past week in Southwest Florida, patchy concentrations of K. brevis were observed from Pinellas to Monroe counties. Relative to last week, cell concentrations were similar in most areas but increased in parts of Monroe County, and decreased in parts of Manatee County. Observations of >1,000,000 K. brevis cells per liter (“high” concentrations) occurred at one site each in Pinellas and Sarasota counties; medium concentrations of K. brevis also occurred only in these counties.
  • In Northwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed in or offshore of Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa Counties, with “medium” concentrations occurring in Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties.
  • On the East Coast over the past week, observations of K. brevis spanned Brevard to Miami-Dade counties. “High” concentrations were observed at one site in Indian River County, and “medium” concentrations occurred in Indian River and Broward counties. Relative to last week, cell concentrations increased in Indian River County and decreased in parts of St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade counties.
Fish Kills
In Southwest Florida, reports of fish kills were received for Pinellas and Sarasota counties. In Northwest Florida, reports of fish kills were received for Okaloosa and Pasco counties. Along the East Coast of Florida, reports of fish kills were received for Brevard, Indian River, Palm Beach and Broward counties.

Respiratory Irritation
Respiratory irritation was reported over the past week in Southwest Florida (in Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, Lee, and Collier counties), Northwest Florida (in Escambia and Okaloosa counties), and the East Coast (in Brevard and Indian River counties).

Forecast
Forecasts by the USF-FWC Collaboration for Prediction of Red Tides for Pinellas to southern Monroe counties predict net northwestern transport of surface waters and southeastern movement of subsurface waters over the next three days. Three-day forecasts for Northwest Florida predict net western transport of surface waters and northeastern movement of subsurface waters from Escambia to western Gulf counties.

The next complete red tide status report will be posted on Friday, October 19th.

This information, including maps and reports with additional details, is also available on the FWRI Red Tide website. The website also provides links to additional information related to the topic of Florida red tide including satellite imagery, experimental red tide forecasts, shellfish harvesting areas, the FWC Fish Kill Hotline, the Florida Poison Information Center (to report human health effects related to exposure to red tide), and other wildlife related hotlines.

So I wen out to the water today and the red tide was as bad or worse than it has ever been.
Dead fish everywhere wicked stench . The sand along the shore was stained red, the water was dark tan.
Apparently the front that moved in with north westerly winds has pushed the red tide back to shore from where the strongest concentration was out in the gulf . If you are in the area near the gulf be warned it really is bad huge fish were washed up all along the gulf side of shell key, along with dead shell fish eels etc. Even large jelly fish sitting at the water line along the beach.

You would not have been able to ignore it, dead fish all over the place floating in the water and piled up on shore = stench everywhere. you just didn't have any where you were I believe it is not really showing south of the skyway channel.

Today I went to see what was going on with the red tide.
Ok so I saw a real bad red tide worse that it looked in the past. I saw boats out on the water in the high dollar waterfront homes areas with people holding small nets on poles scooping up some fish and wearing orange vests, I thought ok someone is trying to pacify the residents, and making this very obvious But maybe not . Maybe they really wanted to clean up the dead fish but doing it with dip nets Small dip nets on a pole would not make a dent in the dead fish floating around the water and a bunch more under the water laying on the bottom if you could get a visual on them with the color of the water being so dark. Boats with people plucking fish from the water. 024 and 025. water color in shallow areas 013 Now I take a ride past the 3 boats with dip nets and find large piles of dead fish floating just a few hundred yards past the 3 boats pictures 030, 032 ,034. and I go down the canal with my bow trimmed down to keep the fish out of the pump in no wake mode. but this area is mostly condos not single family homes however it is very close to the most expensive private home in Pinellas county according to the real estate records anyway. But I did not go that far down as I was running through a lot of fish and didn't want to suck one in the pump. numbers for the fish at the condos 048,050,051,053. So I go tell the net people where all the fish are collecting just 100 to 150 yards away . And I go drive off to the skyway causeway to check on it's dead fish population. 007 and 009 with skyway in the background. Lots of dead fish there. After about an hour I go back to check on the net guys and see if they were really collecting dead fish. So imagine the big collection of fish were still where I last saw them and the net people were by the sea walls and docks of the private homes. Not that they did not have some fish but I think taking the largest number the fastest would have been a better way to do it. Si I also went to Bunces Pass and Fort Desoto, Hell they had a truck with some sort of sweeping wheel driving along the beach with a front end loader behind it, carrying off the fish and disposing of them quickly Guess they wanted to get rid of the fish. Pic 035 and 038 So now it's off to shell key where the dumpster turkeys were having a feast a k a turkey buzzards, 015 so I took a total of 53 pictures and drove the rounds a few times but the water was bad everywhere and the tide was pretty low.

Today I was informed that if you have a captains lic and a certain rating, can't remember if it was 6 or 8 person and if you have a boat you can join the fish pickup and earn 150 dollars per HOUR !
The person who told me this said it was not based on how many fish you collect just the time you put in.
This explains a lot.
I checked the causeways and islands and the dead fish are between 2 and 3 feet up into the edges of the islands etc. And the red tide was still in full force Water was still dark tea colored. This is by far the worst red tide I have ever experienced.

Checked on the red tide yesterday now that we are in the tourist season I know it must be taking it's toll on the people who make a living from that industry , at least the locals since the red tide seems to have vacated the water south of us according to the reports anyway.
The water was still discolored but not quite as heavily as my last visit. I noticed less dead fish floating on the water but with all the 150 an hour boats out picking up the floating fish it is hard to tell if that is the reason for less visible dead fish or a reduction in the red tide concentration in the water.
I checked in the mangroves and found dead fish on land in the trees in about a3 foot wide area however most of those fish had been dead for a while and were decaying, I did note several dead cat fish that looked a lot fresher and for that reason I stopped walking into the mangroves.
Just one spine in the foot can really ruin your day and many more to come if it has a lot of bacteria on it. So in this situation the high concentration of bacteria is a given. And after being on the water yesterday I am once again feeling sick. I took a few picture of the boats dropping off their dead fish at the Tierra Verde draw bridge. Nov 9 2018 dead fish dumping point 002.JPG They have a few dumpsters some equipment and a couple workers there to off load the dead fish from the boats.
Nov 9 2018 dead fish dumping point 002.JPG
And I also received the latest red tide report when I returned from the water, looks like the last one.

In Southwest Florida, observations of >1,000,000 K. brevis cells per liter (“high” concentrations) occurred from Pinellas to Lee counties. Relative to last week, K. brevis concentrations generally decreased in many areas of Manatee, Sarasota, and Collier counties, and increased in parts of Pinellas, Charlotte and Lee counties. In Northwest Florida, “medium” concentrations of K. brevis were observed in Santa Rosa County and in and offshore of Gulf County. On Florida’s East Coast, conditions improved in parts of Brevard and Martin counties where patchy bloom concentrations had been observed the week before.

  • In Southwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background to high concentrations in Pinellas County, background to high concentrations in Manatee County, very low to high concentrations in Sarasota County, low to high concentrations in Charlotte County, background to high concentrations in Lee County, and background to very low concentrations in Collier County.
  • In Northwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at very low to medium concentrations in or offshore of Escambia County, low to medium concentrations in Santa Rosa County, low to medium concentrations in or offshore of Okaloosa County, low to medium concentrations in Bay County, low to medium concentrations in Gulf County, background concentrations in Franklin County, and background concentrations in Pasco County.
  • Along the Florida East Coast over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background concentrations in Brevard County, background concentrations in and offshore of St. Lucie County, very low to low concentrations in Martin County, background to very low concentrations in Palm Beach County, and very low concentrations in Miami-Dade County.
In Southwest Florida over the past week, fish kill reports were received for multiple locations in Pinellas, Manatee, and Sarasota counties. In Northwest Florida, fish kills were reported in Escambia, Okaloosa, Walton, and Bay counties. No reports of fish kills were received over the past week for the East Coast of Florida.

Respiratory irritation was reported over the past week in Southwest Florida (in Pinellas, Manatee, and Sarasota counties). Respiratory irritation was also reported in Northwest Florida (in Escambia and Okaloosa counties). No reports of respiratory irritation were reported for the East Coast of Florida over the past week.

Forecasts by the USF-FWC Collaboration for Prediction of Red Tides for Pinellas to northern Monroe counties predict net southern movement of surface waters and southeastern movement of subsurface waters over the next four days.Four-day forecasts for Escambia to Gulf counties predict variable movement of surface waters and net eastern transport of subsurface waters in most areas

Actually I don't go up into the bay, I usually stay around the gulf beaches and the skyway bridge area. The water did have some dead fish floating but not close to the number from previous weeks.
Once we get this cold front mid week it should help a lot to rid us of the red tide organism. It's still in the 80's and the water is in the high 70's.
I have been boating here since moving here when I was 20 years old in 1972 and I have NEVER seen a red tide this severe.
I recall one several years ago but nothing to come close in comparison to this one. And one day out in that can make you sick .

Went out all day today and the conditions in most of the places I checked were definitely improving.
