I have an old handheld GPS I used a long time ago. I truly don't even remember what it is but I think I'll get it out and see if there is a reasonably priced update for it. I have done the Cooper river portion so many times it is about like going to Lake Keowee now! :D

If that handheld doesn't pan out, what is the best app to use for Android devices?

We were led from lake-locks-charleston-hhi by mainah last year as Andy had motor issues. He navigated us using navionics app on his phone.

Can’t say enough about the Navionics app. A good mount is needed to make it effective for navigating a river or staying on line in the ocean. I have used the app over the last 8 years to navigate costal Maine, riverways in Maine, many lakes in Maine, inland and costal South Carolina, to, from, and around Bimini. Never had an issue and it has always had markers for all obstacles. I even night navigated down the Penobscot River in Maine for 20 miles. Dodging the huge metal ocean stlye non lit channel markers was a bit hairy but I just slowed down and had a crewmember handheld spotlight them off the reflectors when the app showed getting close (I would never do this again in my current boat as you never know what might be floating in the water even though I had made the trip up river with daylight earlier that day). The dock to dock auto routing in the paid version is really cool too.

The Cooper really twists and turns in some shallow areas so you have to pay attention.

Their is fuel at beaufort. @veedubtek brought his ski last year... did you need to fill up in beaufort?
I did, and not sure we'd have made it if not. Maybe if setting the cruise at that perfect sweet spot you could probably just make it all the way, but I wouldn't chance it. Beaufort is a pretty easy fuel stop as long as the water isn't too angry.

Navionics and Active Captain both sound great. Personally, I shed carrying two phones years ago and don’t put apps on my work phone. We are still on the fence given the kids’ school schedules.

You know...I just realized my wife FINALLY ditched her flip phone for an iPhone. It was costing more to have the “grandma phone”. I might get an app as a backup/primary after all. :winkingthumbsup"

Would love to have yall along for the trip.

I have active captain because it allows me to plot on laptop phone whatever and use the built in wifi on plotter to sync and transfer any routes.

No joke...before the iPhone (web order) I spent 45+minutes at the Verizon store waiting for this nice lady in line before me to ask a million questions about the same “grandma” phone my wife just had to stick with (the only two flip phones in the store) when her prior phone unexpectedly went tango uniform. The nice lady and her friend finally closed the show with “how much again?....[Ethel] I just can’t do that....I’ve got bills to pay”....and out they went. I recall where my mind was on the way to the store, so I believe this to be a solid example of a self-fulfilling prophesy. Now in 2019 flip phones are finally a lifestyle challenge to pluck us from a life of distractions . I actually respect the fact my wife doesn’t want a phone distracting her from our kids. Go figure if I installed either, it would be the first app on her iPhone.

May have to try and meet up and meet some of you guys. I live in Bluffton so I put in on the May River at a couple of different spots depending on the tides. It would be Saturday/Sunday for me to get out and the sandbar on the river would probably be the place to be if the weather is nice and the tide is favorable.

The wife and I are staying at Shelter Cover Harbourside through the 25th (without the boat unfortunately). Hope to sit on the balcony and welcome the incoming Jetboater's family! :)

It's about 3hr-4hr from Charleston to HHI. It sounds like my mother in law wants to see Charleston some in the morning. We will probably leave the Charleston area around noon.

On Monday we will leave HHI around 9am and make way back to charleston.

So if it is 3-4 hrs from Charleston to HHI, it normally takes me 2-3 hours from the lock to Charleston. I guess I should allow 5-7 hours total from the lock to HHI if cruising 25-30mph when not in no wake zones? Sound about right?

I'd judge 7hrs to be safe. We stopped for quick fill up at st John's yatch club in Charleston and on the way we stopped in Beaufort as well. The last leg into HHI is long no wake zones.

When are you gonna make the run?

I am hoping to make the run Memorial Day weekend but I don't get that Monday off so it may not happen. However, me and my family are planning a run down the weekend of 8/17 as well.

Has anyone ever docked at Windmill Harbour Marina instead of Shelter Cove?

Been asleep at the wheel on this thread. Windmill Harbor is nice and protected but there is nothing to do as it is a gated community marina. You will have to Uber to get anywhere.

Let me know when you make this trip again. This is something the wife and I really want to do at some point, but I’m not comfortable making the trip alone.
