Enjoyed a ton of different bourbons, ryes, scotches, Irish whiskeys over the years depending on what I'm in the mood for.. normally drink neat or with a splash of water depending on proof (>110ish usually gets some to open it up a bit) if I'm enjoying the spirit on its own.

Far as bourbons specifically, i really enjoyed Rock Hill Farms last time I could get my mitts on it. 'Round 100 proof at about $55/750ml in MI. Price may have moved since last year though.

If you're looking for a good (imho) mixed drink with bourbon though, I would recommend a "Manhattan Eastside" (old Ruth's Chris recipe) as follows (can be cut in half for a single/junior):

3oz Woodford Reserve
1.5oz Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur
1.5oz Powell and Mahoney Lemon Sour
1 tsp Luxardo Cherry syrup
Shake with ice and strain into lowball glass or whatever suits you

Garnish with a spear of 2 (or however many you prefer) Luxardo Cherries

For me, I can't really substitute Luxardos out or the drink just isn't the same. Mayyybe Filthy's if you can't find Luxardos. But regular maraschino cherries would be nasty and ruin the drink.

Cheers!
Sláinte!
na zdrowie!
Etc.

Woodford Reserve. I'm actually liking Russell's 10 Year lately.

Not that Wisconsin is this big bourbon area but I may be partial to J. Henry & Sons. Made local (in Dane, WI) and made from ingredients that were developed right here where I work (UW-Madison).

I just saw this at Costco yesterday, and I was gonna look it up and see what I could find out about it. What is it selling for around your parts?

Most start in the $40-55 range, depending where you go. At Total Wine, the 5 year is about $40.

anyone ever just wander aimlessly through the whiskey area in the liquor section at the grocery store, then have the young person working come up and suggest something to try?

I do this sometimes... last week just lookin'. Goofy kid suggested I try the Irish whiskey "Finagrens" Know nothing about it.... it was on sale for 20 bucks. :) 2nd shelf, not top, HAH! so I grabbed some... I really dig it. lol Wouldnt call it flavorful or anything though...

That's what its about for me... tryin' different stuff, even though I have my faves. And not just agreeing with other people who turn their nose up at stuff. (this is annoying)

I have found I like most Irish whiskeys actually. Like if I needed to tie one on to forget something, id probably go that route. :)
This is me, to a T. When I step foot inside a Costco, it's a given that I'm gonna check out their liquor department to see if they've got anything new, or if I finally get the urge to open the wallet for something I previously skipped because it was too pricey...that day ;)

The only thing I am not a fan of, is someone like my father-in-law, who would tell you when some booze was simply verboten to drink with anything other than ice, or mebbe water if the mood hit you. I had an Old Fashioned with Maker's Mark, and I thought he was going to slap the drink right out of my hand! Hey, I spent the money on it, I'll drink it however I like it. It's all personal taste, which makes things interesting. When you see someone who shares a similar affinity for something, you look at what they've also liked, and it helps ease the mind for giving it a try.

For myself, another nice way to try something that I simply wouldn't consider spending a lot of cash on, is to try it at a place that has it. I just got back from a special night, 21st anniversary dinner, and I was able to try Blanton's at this place. $18 for a glass, neat, and if I hadn't gone there, I wouldn't have spent the money. Now that I've tried it, I still won't spend the money on it, but that's just because it's not for me. I don't begrudge anyone their tastes, as long as there's good conversation and it's an enjoyable time together.

old fashioned <drools> those are the best on the back of a boat! Im just a fan of emphasizing the flavor of the booze. not hiding it in soda or colored fruit syrups lol

Costco, ill snag their blended scotch every now and again, just to have as the hot tub drink... :)

Definitely agree on trying the glass. Thats the best.

Just got back from Costco, it's not a bourbon, but I picked up a bottle of Aberfeldy 12-year-old scotch. Looking forward to opening it up soon.

I'm a Makers Mark guy. There are lots to chose from in my area though being decently close to Kentucky. Makers and Coke/Pepsi is my go to. I've toured the distillery. Pretty cool place with a lot of neat history. Makers 46>the regular Makers. It has a lot smoother taste going for it. Makers Mark "Cask Strength" is good as well but it has a heck of a kick to it. Of course being 110-115 proof you kind of expect it to. The Cask Strength is straight out of the barrel before they do any of the dilution using spring water (sourced on their distillery grounds) to the regular levels. They also have a "Private Select" program where larger retailers and bars can come to the distillery and chose between 5 different types of Staves to give a unique taste to their own bottles. I've only drank from one Private Select. It was during the tour and from what I remember it was basically the Makers 46 in Cask Strength form. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Woodford Reserve and Old Forester 1920 "Prohibition Style" are both good as well.
