Q: Why doesn't the clicking on the thread title take me to the first post in a thread?

A: If you are a guest, it does.

If you are a registered member however, it makes use of the read-marking system that keeps track of threads you have read and will take you to the first unread post within that thread. It works identically to the 'Go to first unread' button in both vBulletin and IPB.

If you want to access the first post in a thread, regardless of its read state, simply click on the start date.

The thinking behind this behaviour is that for the majority of people, it makes sense to jump to your first unread post. Given that this is the most commonly-intended action, it follows that this should be the primary link in the thread list, rather than a small button that is more difficult to click.

Note:
If the system considers that an entire thread has been read, clicking the thread title will open the thread from the beginning. Also, the forum automatically considers a thread read after 28 days....so if you don't log on for a 2 months, only the last 28 days of threads will appear unread to you.

@Julian, @Bruce,
So after 28 days a thread no longer appears bolded even if I've been logging in regularly? Is this done for performance reasons or is that just an arbitrary setting. Is it user changeable? I would prefer not to have a limit on when threads get marked read in case I miss one and at later date having more time to read through them more carefully find it. On the other forum when I click unread posts, I only get those posts and not all of them. This makes the list of unread posts much more concise and quicker to get through.

It is changeable for the entire forum. I'm not sure I understand why this would be an issue. Are you reading every single post every time you log in? If there is a post you want to keep an eye on, "Watch" it (click on the watch button).

No, I only read threads with titles that are of interest to me so that leaves one or two unread ;). It really depends on how much time I have to read. Occasionally I miss one that I am interested in and if the forum makes them all unread after a while I'll probably never find it on one of my binge reads thinking I have already read it. It's not a big deal. Anyone can make the forum all read at any time with the mark all threads read feature.
I'm more interested in a feature that only shows unread threads like YJB has.

This is "smart" behavior that isn't so smart... Clicking on thread should always take a clicker to the first page.

Random related: Apple has this problem a LOT ... I just started with OSX. Some UI behavior is great, other ridiculous. What's funny is the Mac fans defending assinine behavior, and blaming it on Windows centric thinking. Intuitive behavior exists outside any brand OS - Apple seems to sometimes try to force intuition its own way, then Mac heads defend it because Apple created it. Sounds kind of like "if your friends jumped off a bridge.."

Why would you want it to always take you to the first page? Why wouldn't you want it to take you to the last reply you've not read?

@DoubleThrust regardless of why you think it should take you to the first post, if want to go to the first post of a thread you've read some post in, just click on the date...that will take you to the first post regardless of what you've read/not read.
