Ok, as i was coming into the dock this evening I had on all the navigation lights. We had to sit for about 20 minutes to wait for a ramp to open up. I then turned of the navigation lights. Once we got vehicle I pulled the boat onto the trailer I went up to the front to crawl off the bow onto the trailer and the chrome navigation light was hot, so hot I couldn't even in touch it, it was painful. I did check out in the lake and they were working as expected.

Is it normal for it to be that hot? It doesn't sound safe. Any ideas?

I just went out and looked at the lighting connections I don't see anything wrong in my limited knowledge?

Bumped. Last night I turned on the navigation lights for about 30 minutes and the front one became very hot again. Is this normal for these on our boats?

I'll have mine on tonight and will let you know. Do you have an IR temp gun to measure actual temp?

No i don't, but the first night I rested the under part of my forearm on it and it was a mild burn that hurt for two days. Too hot to touch.

I guess if it's not melting itself down, just remind guests to not touch the light. But I'll tell you if mine gets hot when we're out tonight.

I really appreciate it. More or less if it the norm, than I just need the kids to remember that or possibly go to LED's. I just want to verify that it is not a problem that needs to be addressed for safety/mechanical.

I would think warm is normal but too hot to touch is not. Maybe heating up because of high resistance? Try cleaning all of the light and bulb contacts, could be some corrosion.

I just bought a SeaSense from WestMarine and a TecNiq M20.
The SeaSense is a little big and the rubber hangs over a bit but it's brighter than the Tecniq. Both are rated at 2NM. Not sure which one I'm keeping yet. IMG_2244.jpegIMG_2249.jpeg

It's gotta match the Tron/Knight Rider vibe I've already got going :)IMG_1918.jpeg

@Hike I like the Sea Sense One. Which one did you keep?

@ctyke Where you able to check yours on how hot it got? Trying to determine if I should replace or not.

I ran mine at night over the weekend for about a half hour, no noticeable heat - but the air was cooler by then too.

I kept the sea sense. they're both LED, so no heat and low power draw.

Thanks everyone! She seems to be better now, took 3 weeks to recover! Of the 5 of us, my wife got it, lasted 2 weeks for her, my oldest daughter. Me and the other two either didn't get it or we were asymptomatic.

Any light fixture that gives you a burn that lasts a couple days is definitely too hot. As mentioned, check for corrosion in the bulb socket. Otherwise I'd replace.
