12 Volt Vacuum

After installing the hydro teak I am feeling like I need a 12 volt vacuum to use and possibly keep in the boat.

In the past I have typically used a large shop vac.

I am curious what other members may have that works well.

I grab this from the kitchen, but storing one on the boat might be a good idea.

I use a Dewalt 18v vacuum after every trip. The battery will do my 21 foot boat. And I normally have a spare in my tow vehicle too.

My barn has the shop vac sitting right there, put the boat away and cover if not wet. But if I notice anything that needs attention, it gets it! Keeping it clean makes it last longer!

Before y'all get your panties in a bunch, I'll have you know that there was nothing at all sexist, misogynistic or mean about my reply.

My wife likes to keep things clean....not a clean freak, but as we all do, she has her own preferences about how she likes things to be. One of those things is the cockpit of the boat - don't ask me why. I'll be wandering around on shore, playing horse shoes or just hanging out and I'll look over and see her in the boat cleaning. Especially after one of the kids or grandkids has been in there snackin' on sumpthin'. She'll wipe down the whole floor with paper towels and windex or whatever is handy. Maybe it's the white that shows up the crumbs. I don't know.

Maybe she enjoys it, who knows. I don't ask her to do it, she just does. And frankly I'm glad she does...

Never used a 12V one that was worth it. I just pull out the shop vac.

Now, to answer your question...I have a Makita 12v vac that sucks. Really good I might add. But they fill up fast.
I'm with Julian. I wait until I hit the Oasis after I retrieve the boat. It has a large awning covered area with powerful vacuums right next to the high bay self wash. I hit the carpet with the vacuum and once or twice a year I'll power wash it all right there. And it's usually so friggin hot that everything is dry by the time I tow it over to storage.

I boat on a prehistoric part of the river, No power on my dock and I have to run cords from shore if I want power, not worth the hassle. I would be interested in a 12 V corded or cordless vac to keep the boat clean.

I've had my Dewalt for 5 years or so. Gets double duty with garage and boat use. I would buy it again if needed.

I've wondered about the Dewalt ones as I have a whole slew of Dewalt tools and 3 batteries.....#$@%....there's some more money this site is gonna cost me!

I don't think Glass meant anything other than the chest puffing and thumping guys are famous for...like he isn't any more hen pecked than the rest of us! I know Stacey, and she can give it as good as she can take it! She won't be one to get fluster by it, but she will put you in your place too! And...she can captain any of these boats! Now Stacey, don't take offense to the "hen pecked" comment...I will ask the mrs, I am sure she will say I am NOT! LOL.

As small as the boats are, this works wonders until the boat is home. I had a battery powered (not 12v), dust buster? It gave up the ghost years ago. Come to think of it, it dang sure wasn't 14.4V like the newer version of the dust buster. But the shop vac works good at home, and the dust pan and whisk broom handles the in-between. Now if my wife wouldn't point out the crumbs for me!

You can get the one I have for around 50 bucks.
We have had it for almost two years now.
Pros:

• plenty of power
• washable filter so you never have to buy another one
• battery will last for the entire boat clean up, however we are starting to get noticeably shorter run times.
• easy empty compartment
• easy to clean, all main parts including filter are dishwasher safe
• built in brush attachment
• pivoting suction nozzle, however we usually keep it in the pointing straight forward position
• light weight

Cons:

• doesn't come with a mount so it sits on the counter top, I think I can build a mount but haven't made it a priority
• our battery is starting to wind down It's not an easily replaced battery but could be done with a little soldering or taking it to your local batteries plus store.
• the flapper that keeps the junk inside when the vacuum is off, tends to make a ton noise when the unit is in use. I trimmed it a little but then it started making a lot of noise again.
• very noisy mainly due to the above issue.
• No hose attachments (you could maybe make one)
• Suction Opening is 1.75" x 0.75" This might be considered a positive for most handvacs but for boat cleanup it might be an issue occasionally
