In preparation for the Bimini 2017 trip, I have decided to get me a higher capacity bilge pump. I originally intended to put this as an additional pump but could not find suitable location in the engine bay or the bilge...and running the hoses/wires would have been a huge hassle. So I simply replaced the original 500gph pump and followed the same hose routing. I even used the metal screen that was in the original pump. I (will) enlarged the holes size on the hull for the bigger hose fitting and cut the wire to the existing harness so it can be run with factory switch. Since it is a bigger capacity pump, I imagine bigger fuse may be needed but we shall see.

Second picture.
Did you put screws into the hull?
Just asking!!!

This is something i want to do before bimini as well but don't know if i will get to it. I have seen our boats bail pretty good. I have also seen how they float when full of water. Still on the "to do" list.

they were the existing screws holding the original pump. didn't have to drill the holes or anything.

I would say this is the simplest way to increase capacity.

Seems like a lot of folks also like the redundancy of the 2nd pump. Are you still thinking to add another, or just go with the higher capacity for now?

I think this will do it for me. Its just a huge pain in the ass to add a second outlet

I hate to ask but what do you know about the reliability of this pump? Bigger is better as long as it is reliable.

@Bruce That pump has good reviews on Amazon. Better than most on Amazon actually. It is amazing to me how many people have bad things to say about bilge pumps and float switches. I assume it is mostly due to their location and to a general lack of maintenance by the owners. I'm installing the same pump as a back up for my Rule 750.

I suppose in the case of a bilge pump all we can do is inspect and test the pump and float switch periodically and replace as needed.

I saw a couple of very negative reviews for pumps from the same brand as well. Hopefully it is a good pump. Certainly a great price if it is.

I went back and forth on this as well. I chose to replace the current pump and then I added a second one that has the built in float switch and it is directly hooked to the battery. I did have to install a second outlet and hose but it was really for "redundancy" and "load balancing" if it ever came to that. Either way, I think this is an excellent upgrade for your Bimini trip. Great links to the parts needed

4th picture is installed but i should get a wider picture ...not sure if it will show due to all the hoses being in the way...

I looked all over amazon and they all look like either knock offs or rebrands, lol

So i have decided i want an automatic bilge. Usually i turn it on and off manually via switch but i may forget to turn it off and possibly burn out the motor.

Same capacity but with built float switch
