When my 2008 Yamaha trailer with surge brakes is plugged into my truck should it display inside of my vehicle as connected like electric brakes do?

No. It gives no feedback signal to the vehicle.

The electrical connection operates running lights, LH & RH turn signal, and brake lights with signal travelling from vehicle to trailer only. Vehicle also passes reverse signal to the trailer which activates a solenoid in the trailer preventing the surge brake from actuating while you are backing up.

Thanks!

When in reverse the trailer backs down the boat ramps fine but when I back up my driveway the surge brakes actuate and I have to manually override them. I have the 5 pin harness connected to a 7 pin adapter. Is there a way to check if a reverse signal is being transmitted.

I imagine there is a way to check it with a meter. I use a similar 7 round to 5 flat adapter but I don't know the pinout... there may be a reference somewhere here on JBN. If you have the lockout key, it can be used to mechanically prevent the surge brake actuater from sliding / engaging (I assume that's what you mean by manually overriding.) I understand it is not unusual form the solenoid to fail on this type of trailer. Note: the couple times I tried the lockout key, I had to tape it in place but it did work.

I would suggest that your 5th wire, the blue one, is not working. Down the ramp the surge brake is not activated (down hill) but likely is in the driveway or any other general reverse. I suggest that an afternoon rewiring with some LED lights will save you double the time later. I know that one from experience. Cam.
