Hi Everyone,

I'm new to boating and am so grateful for this forum, a veritable gold mine of information, curated by tremendously knowledgeable people, so I apologize for the most basic of questions.

I am trying to solve a problem whereby every time I go out on the water, when I retrieve there is probably a gallon of water give or take that comes out the drain plug.

My expectation was that it should be dry. I searched a bit and found that the scupper valve is one entry point for water that has plagued some, especially on 210/230s.

Is it still an issue for 242x? Is this the location of the scupper on a 242x ( right of port side engine)? If so, how good can it be to have it located where it rests on the trailer bunk? Seems like a bad spot due to boat weight and trailering impact along with sliding motion on launch/retrieval.

I'm attaching a pic in case what I'm seeing is something else entirely.

Additionally, should I be able to stick my finger in and feel rubbery material?

Thanks
Marco

Hi Marco and welcome to the forum!

That looks like your ballast fill intake. The scupper is out back.

As for water getting into your boat I would inspect your anchor locker drain first to see if there is a gap. Check out the link he posted above. Next look into the rub rail.

Pretty stupid place for it, sitting right on the bunks. . . . .

I agree it is a strange place. Also it's kind of hard to tell the ground orientation in the image but are your bunks flipped 90 degrees and standing up? It could be the camera angle playing tricks on me or maybe I'm just disoriented with exactly where I'm look at in the boat in relation to the ground.

This is the location of the scupper valve on the newer model boats. Sorry my ladder is in the way. I was told a little water was common.

I was getting a lot of water in mine, to the point causing my bilge was pumping a 1/2 gal or so every 15min and water would drain from the rear plug for about 1 min on the ramp. Come to find out, the hose that connects the drain in the clean out plug locker had detached at the top and was letting water flow up from the exit port under the swim deck into the rear access compartment.

@J-RAD - Is the scupper on yours above the waterline at rest?

I believe the water comes right up to the bottom of the swim deck, maybe 1 or 2 inches below. Placing it right at or just below the water line.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to both welcome/read my post, and write back. Sorry for my delayed response. Could be the ballast intake. Didn't think of that. It is a little bit in front of jet intake so I would expect still below water line. I think I'm probably in similar situation to j-rad as far as water volumes are concerned so will check that as well as anchor locker drain. Is it fair to expect that barring water coming in over the bow, there should be no water coming out when I open the drain plug after retrieving?

Thanks again

You can get water in the bilge if you come off plane quickly which water will then rush up on the swim platform and sometimes reach the second level of the platform where the cup holders and cleanout tray are. FYI the cleanout cover tray is not sealed so any water that gets in the cleanout area can work its way into the bilge. Some boats tend to have a cup or two of water and others like mine are dry for the most part when removing the drain plug. If you're getting gallons then it's likely from the anchor locker drain or somewhere else entering the boat.

Thx haknslash. I hadn't thought of the cup holders and clean out tray/ports. That can also explain some of it but I will check the anchor locker for sure.

The service manual indicates the clean out tray is to be sealed but yamaha doesnt do a very good job at this. My boat had water entering from behind the rub rail on the rear and both driveshaft seals were leaking as well.

Also, another place water can enter is through the drain line that is intended to allow water to drain from the clean out tray area but under quick stops or hard reversing, water can get pushed up into the tray area and if you havent sealed around the clean out tray, this water will go straight into the bilge area. I plugged my drain line from the top with a rubber stopper from home depot to prevent water from coming up into the tray area.

Thanks Pullen724

Now it's just a matter of making the time to start looking at and fixing these areas as appropriate. I want to make sure we are ready for Bimini in 2018.
