Wanted to put this post together for future 21' owners that want to surf these boats. Here's the progression of waves as you add pieces of the puzzle together:

Stock boat, no ballast, 11mph:
Wave stock.jpeg

750lb transom bag, 750lb ski locker bag (fat sac brand):
Wave 2.jpeg

750 transom bag, 750 ski locker bag, and Yamaha Wakebooster:
wakebooster.jpeg

750 transom bag, 750 ski locker, Wakebooster, 5 adults on board, Ride Steady speed control:
Wave 3.jpeg

750 transom, 750 ski locker, Wakebooster, 500lb floor bag on rear, 4 adults, 3 kids, Ride Steady. This is the weight that my 1.8 twin motors couldn't do any faster than 13mph and I had to ask an adult to stand in the bow just to get up to 11mph.
Wave 4.jpeg Wave 5.jpeg

As you can see, 2000lbs of water weight plus another 300-600 pounds of human ballast make a GREAT wake with tons of room to play and lots of push. Water depth is very important and needs to be 8+ to get push, 15+ for a great wake. Ride Steady is also VERY necessary when surfing with friends as I'm always doing a 1-5mph adjustment for each rider which makes a difference depending on their weight on the board and riding ability - faster speeds gives a longer pocket where slower speeds creates huge curls.

So how much does it cost to make a 212S into a surfable boat?

Ballasts & pumps: $1100
Wakebooster: $800
Ride Steady: $1400
Two hours of surfing: $60 in gas

$60 in gas? That's 30 gallon here. We surf a couple of hours and use about 12g at most. The new boats suck it up I guess.

Gas is $2.15 here and those 1.8's are, at full weight, running WOT. With a wave that nice I can surf indefinitely. :)

Great post. I like how you linked pictures of your progression. I just got the 2021 212XD so working on getting it to surf. I’m 6’2” 230 pounds. Just ordered the 725# trans one Fatsac.

Can’t thank anmut enough. Finally got a chance to ride this wave and it’s legit, honestly is bigger than I expected.

That was fun - next time: different/bigger water and more time for surfing and foiling.

Here is my 2021 212 XD. I’m still playing with the best setup also. I’ve only surfed 3 times now so you can’t judge the surfing, but seemed like a pretty good wave. This was both rear ballasts full, plus 725# fat sac on surf side rear, center ballast at 65%, and one adult in the bow plus the driver.

is it me or these 21ft boats make a impressive wave. Seems taller then all the 24ft and 25ft boats in yammys lineup.

2,000 lbs of ballast makes a good wave in any Yamaha... :)

Do you have a booster or wedge? Wave is super clean!

shit, technically hes only got the added 725lb and the factory ballast. Thats killer for just one bag on board. Rest of us got shit strewed all over lol

Isn't factory ballast around 1200lbs? So he's near what I'm running, he just has less space for storage :)

They hold 1100# stock ballast and I am using the Yamaha wakebooster. But I have to say I don’t even like having one bag tied to the back and the 20 minutes it takes to set it up. I know it’s necessary for a Yamaha to surf properly though. Just wish they put a couple thousand pounds stock.

I do lose the use of the ski locker for large items. I just store the extra bag for the rear in there when it’s not in use. But pre plumbed bags are 1000% easier and quicker to use.

That's what drives me nuts with the Yamaha "wake boats" - you get very little ballast weight and give up a lot of room.

I agree, setup is a PITA. I use two pumps and it still takes me 15-20 minutes to fill three bags.

I know summer is almost over up here in WI. However I finally had a chance to use my custom fat sac bag on my 212S with the WakeBooster yesterday. Was able to go ropeless with just this setup. Keep in mind I had a full tank of fuel, the normal junk on my boat, and a light crew under 200lbs. Really need to figure out a better way to secure this bag so if anyone has a 21’ and has pictures please post.
