I'm on my second 21' yamaha jet boat. My 2013 was cruising along and one engine just quit - not good. Back to dock on one engine. Diagnosing reveals that starter spins the flywheel and the prop shaft out the back of engine. Pulled plugs and pistons not going up and down - none. Thinking I split the crank shaft at the flywheel.

I am looking to pull the engine to get it on my bench to pull it open. I am in search of a service / repair manual for the boat. Maybe someone has pulled the engine and documented it? Or someone could point me in a direction for a step by step approach.

Once I figure it out, I will document my pulling engine, disassembly and repair / replace engine. Thanks in advance.

If the starter is spinning the prop shaft the crank is intact.

Thank you for the reply. I have a prop shaft that is spinning with the starter and 4 pistons not going up and down when the starter is spinning.

I have pulled an engine (multiple times unfortunately) on my 2008 Ar210. I’m sure yours is a bit different. But here’s a doc that I put together that might help.

Thank you. This is what I am looking for. It is similar to the newer model but still different enough. Air filters and computers are in different locations and has a different engine. I will refer to that helpful doc. But possibly some has something similar for a 2013. Or could copy / paste from manual. Thanks again for sharing.

The crankshaft cant be broken if the prop is spinning because the starter turns the front of the crank. The flywheel is in the front cover.

From what I can ascertain, the crank is only connected to the starter gear with a key #19. There is then a transfer shaft #12 which connects to the drive coupler #2.
Given the info I have shared that the starter turns the output shaft but not the engine, I believe there is a disconnect between the engine crank shaft and the drive coupler. This is likely a failed woodruff key and/or a failure in the transfer shaft.
Does anyone have experience with this or has laid eyes on this connection to better explain it?
I was prepared to pull the engine, but possibly it is repairable within the boat hull.

You are correct i was thinking of another setup. But i cant see how if the key broke the output shaft shouldn't spin
13 screws onto the threads of the crank shaft.

I can only report on what I see. I too do not understand how it is happening. Hence the post with questions. If you promise to tell me I am correct again I will post a video of the output shaft spinning. I am looking for someone with knowledge of this area between the engine and the drive coupler. Thanks.

I am sure the shaft is spinning if you say so , but the coupler is screwed onto the small shaft #13 and that small shaft is screwed onto the crank. I personally have had to replace the starter spag on a 1.8l and all that has to be removed to do the job

Regardless of what broke, it needs to be removed and start pulling it apart to determine what happened guessing at this point is not fixing it. Hopefully its not a broken crank or rods.
