I had to change my oil before a week long trip to the lake last month. I couldn't get the filter off so that didn't get replaced, only the oil. Can I change the oil filter without extracting the oil ... if I can, will there be a bigger mess as a result?

Sure you can just place some newspaper or rags under it but that is necessary in any event when you remove the oil filter you do drip some oil , and be sure to add a bit of oil to replace what was in the filter.

Jeff, are saying those are better than a plain oil filter wrench?

for removing a filter hell yes been doing that for over 50 years my channel locks have never failed me when it comes to a stuck oil filter but NEVER use any wrench installing a filter I like the Fram TG3600 oil filters they have a rough gripping surface at the end for tightening them with your hand. And the case is very heavy duty the filter has a 99 percent efficiency rating and more capacity than the factory filter and not expensive average price is in the 6 dollar range
