Dumb question I'm sure, but how do you take on "broadside" waves? What is broadside? Take waves head on if possible right?

My bow is pretty low on my 212x so when I see a big roller coming I take it at an angle to avoid swamping over the bow. I recently had to test this when I had my boat on Lake Superior with some huge waves rolling through the pier underneath the Aerial lift bridge in Duluth, MN.
