What is the mechanism for pushing water through the exhaust system on our boats? Is it only from the impeller pushing it through the system or is there suction from the exhaust system?

There is an intake for water in the housing that is behind the impeller. The water is pushed into the system by the jet stream force. If you look on the side of your housing, there is a rectangle plate with 4 bolts holding it on, under that plate is the intake screen water comes through.

@Big Shasta is correct when in the water. When on the hose the mechanism is the water pressure from the hose.

What pushes the water out of the water box "muffler" is the exhaust gases exiting the engine, that is why the engine must be running to avoid water going back into the engine through the exhaust system.

Thanks guys. When considering a gravity fed liquid (saltaway, antifreeze, water, etc..) I wanted to make sure that it was actually going through the exhaust and cooling the engine. Without the the impeller intake hose pinched off I think it would all exit the intake and not go through the engine.
