That's the new eject feature. Still fine tuning it, apparently.

Ya, that yellow one above is a SeaDoo XP. The original pogo stick seat.

So my thoughts are this happened due to fume build up in the hull? I am always in the habit of opening the seat, just like you would turn on your exhaust fan on your boat before firing up. But what gets me is why it happened after start up and while idling? And where did the spark come from.

Theory #1. Gas is not explosive, but flammable. Fumes are highly explosive. I can only guess the fumes existed, and some sort of fuel leak started fire due to heat, thus causing the explosion as it lit the fumes. Wow.

It's definitely fumes being ignited, p w c is basically an inboard but they are exempt to the ventilation fan requirements of inboards.
Jet boats are also inboards but they have fans to clear out any fumes, however the jet boat has a vented fuel system and the p w c has a closed system so if the fuel system develops any leak any where the pressure in the tank vents into the hull.
There are air inlets hidden to allow the engine to run but not sink the ski if it rolls over . All it take is is enough fuel vapors inside the hull and a spark to ignite it.
before after but it was a Polaris and no one should have an attitude if they are riding one of those lol.
One thing I did see that could be as bad as the ski exploding or worse .

If you want to kill your child place them between you and the handlebars , hit one sand bar and crush them like a bug, nice camo life jacket on the adult too! Or not!

Do the Yamahas have a vent or they also susceptible to such explosions?

I believe all skies are closed systems with a relief valve that vents after a certain pressure but any leak in the engine compartment would be a problem, considering most people who ride skies are " bat ship nuts" I guess is just a little added adrenalin,
Think about it if the engine throws a rod guess where it will end up. I think I am going to pad my seats with Kevlar from now on .

I keep my seats on my skis popped up anyway all the time when not in use so that moisture and mold doesnt grow. I only latch them when trailering and always pop up to vent prior to launch.
I also refill gas after a ride

This thread is certainly educational.
I'm glad to have stumbled in here, even though I never ride jetskis my kids had on occasion. This is a really good reminder... to check under the seat before launching.

After 2 weeks of not riding my skies due to the cold weather and a storm system with huge winds for several days I decided to go out and check my batteries as my skies get used several times every week so letting them sit 2 weeks is unusual.
As I leaned over the seat to hit the start button I immediately had a recollection of the explosion of the Kawasaki and imagined that sort of force would kill you instantly if you were not sitting on the seat not to mention even if you were on the seat landing on your head on the ground after being launched into the air would ruin your day. So now I remove a seat before starting the ski on the trailer.

Again, that wasn't a Kawasaki. It was a Yamaha....

IMO skis should have a blower to evacuate the vapors just like all other inboards or enclosed engines.
