I have been for the last 4 hours going through a Stone warehouse being shown Granite, Porcelain, Quartz and Quartzite. We have picked out a slab of granite to make 50 sqft. of kitchen countertop. Looks like $65 per square foot installed. We were going to go Quartz but but liked the warmth of Granite.

Any thoughts on the two? Does the price seem about right? I didn't want to spend $3500 +- on the ordeal, it is eating into my private boat fund I have stashed away. Someone mentioned that you can get it alot cheaper through different wholesale places, but I have yet to find one.

Need to finish this damn kitchen, so I can get back to all things boating. As most of you have noticed I haven't been very active on the forum in the last month or so, the Admiral told me that if I have time to type I can be working on her kitchen!

We chose Quartzite, I think. I am not sure why, but we like it very much. It is not as varigated as granite, but, if I remember correctly, it may be a better surface for heat and liquids. Quartzite

Yes we looked at the quartize and didn't see one that the Admiral fell in love with, found one in Granite. Yes Quartzite is a great natural stone.

Couple of years ago when redoing our kitchen - of all the options, the woman picked corian. Keep in mind, at the time, it was more money than granite. I asked and re-asked - r u sure. Cause I really don’t give a shit - as long as she’s happy.
Fast forward to today - she wants granite.

@octavio3311 Corian is good stuff, I had it installed in a home I built 20 years ago. Lots of it. Looked great

@jocolo21 Yes I was reading Quartz is no maintenance where Granite is quick seal. I guess after looking at all the samples I felt that the Granite was a bit warmer and richer in tone. Again I could be full of shit as well, since after the first couple of hours I thought I was about to black out after looking at everything and all the different selections.

We did the install of the kitchen cabinets and counter tops in our home in 2002. The wife chose (3) different surfaces. Here are a few pictures of what she chose, without showing too much clutter. She chose green/grey granite for the baking station.

20201121_073127.jpg

Tile for the main countertops with epoxy grout. It will take hot pots off the stove.

20201121_073446.jpg

And for the island she decided on a Boos block. A quartersawn hard maple butcherblock 42" x 10' long. A great place to cut up game.

20201121_074051.jpg

All 3 have held up well with no issues to report. Dated? Ya probably, but it is a country kitchen and is rock solid with no chips or cracks.

Here is the full clutter, busiest room in the house shot.

I never got around to putting the matching wood paneling on the frig. We will be installing a S.S. frig. soon.

Man....I feel your pain. We just finished a complete kitchen tear out and remodel to include custom cabinets, flooring, granite countertops, and all new appliances! I coulda bought a new boat for all this. In addition we had all the carpet pulled and hardwood floors installed. Anyway, we had Silestone in the old kitchen, but the wife wanted Granite because of its uniqueness. Gotta admit, I agree. Here are some pics of our kitchen redo and our invoice for the granite purchase and install. Understand that this was for 2 full slabs (about 88 sq' per slab) and we had a small bathroom and a bar area redone with the same granite.Screenshot (7).png20201122_095214.jpg20201122_095410.jpg20201122_095245.jpg20201122_095338.jpg

Just put in New top of the line Samsung stove/oven and Microwave. Refrigerator is back ordered till end of January. Thought it was cool how I could control oven from phone or alexa and see what is cooking inside on my samsung Q80 Tv.

Pretty wiped out. But you are right @robby76 if she picks it, I am in the clear :)

Flooring should show up in the next few days, so you know what I will be doing this weekend in lock down :(

@captras Thanks for the info. Ours is about 50 sq. ft. or so and around $3,300. Guy is coming to measure on Tuesday or Wed, then they will give me firm number. Also your kitchen looks great. I like the crown and the countertop alot.

Really getting sidetracked from jetboats....but do you have any trouble opening your fridge door with it so close to the wall? We are remodeling and I have the same situation.

My $.02 as the owner of a custom cabinet company. You can't go too wrong with either quartz or granite. I've had quartz I'm my 2 personal kitchen's and they've been trouble free. No maintenance whatsoever. The only warning is to not place hot pans directly in it as it can leave a burn mark. We're not pro chefs here so there's little temptation to move pans from the stove to counter. You might could ask your fabricator if he'll use the cut-outs from your sink to make a couple cutting boards. It's nice because it'll blend in. You can keep it by the cooktop and use it to set hot items on. My guess is it's probably more resilient than they make it out to be.

Granite is forged in the furnace of hell to start so no heat warning to be concerned with. Just sealing it on a regular interval. This is due to it being naturally porous and can harbor bacteria. I know many... I'd almost say most are slackers when it comes to sealing their granite anyway.

Ours is Ceasarstone - Alipne Mist but it's honed to give it the dull look.

@GiddYupJoe Looks Fantastic. Oddly enough, the same counter top/pattern and color you have, was very similar to the Quartz the Admiral initially picked out. Like your wine fridge as well. We are doing the same with a 24" one as well. Haven't purchased it yet though, waiting in the cabinets for it which are behind.

Your uppers look like 39" cabinets? I have 39" cabinets for uppers but we pushed them to the ceiling (8ft.), actually 1/2" lower and instead of crown at the top I will be using a scribe. I do have the matching crown, but since we are tall, the admiral is just a hair under 6' - as am I , although on her license it says 5' 9" - I don't go there on that one, so I have 21 " counter space. Before the counter top comes in, within the next week to 10 days we are debating whether to increase the height of the base cabinets 1" or so. I would just build a it up on top with a frame over the cabinets. More work, meh.

@jamesk No this is actually about jetboats.... The happier the Admiral is on the kitchen and the more I spend on it, the more I get to spend on the boat without issue or glaring looks, cause in the back of her mind she will know I will bring up her kitchen and all the upgrades she wanted last minute! Like, Hay, couldn't we just remove these two walls? All I heard was sure.... you can now buy the $2000 trolling motor.. :) Few more kitchen mods and accessories, and I could easily get away with an upgrade to a 25' footer, at least I think so.

Check radiation level. Granit will probably Do radiation. And I don't Really understand how this topic concerns Jet boats.

Nice kitchen thread that's what I have done for the last 30 years designing and selling kitchens its paid for numerous yamahas.

Granite slabs come from all over the world created by nature and vary on how porous they are I had a client that had issues with water rings from his glass sweating. They would eventually dry out but no matter what sealer was used it left rings. We received about 20 samples for our showroom on a rainy day two of them absorbed the rain drops and dried out but they are all different.

Quartzite is natural and I have seen it have clear filler for some of the natural voids that eventually yellowed to look like stains but its has an amazing look natures finger print

Quartz is completely non absorbent and I went on a factory tour at the cambria plant, really impressed I have supplied over 200 Quartz tops no issues

It dosen't...But we have real granite countertops in our 91' Beneteau sailboat in the galley (kitchen) area, but no good pictures of it. So it does have something to do with boats, just not a jetboat.
