I'm looking at a 2017 212x and the warranty on the engines and pumps are about to expire. Let's consider the warranty gone since it will be by next season and the season is over in MI. I believe it's been well maintained. There are many dollars to save over a new boat and the risk I see is with the lack of a warranty. I've spent some time on the forum and I'm not seeing lots of discussion on engine and jet issues.

Thoughts from those with experience with boat with these engines are much appreciated.

Thanks!
Jeff

You can extend that warranty with a Y.E.S. warranty for up to 4 additional years if you have any concerns.

I got 3 with my purchase and added 2 more for the piece of mind. I have had several items take car of through the warranty (not engine or pump related).
Though most should have been covered anyway from my perspective given they were largely considered fit and finish flaws.

Just did some googling. Calling the 800 number tomorrow for details. Thanks for the tip!

You can extend as mentioned but honestly the concern would still be low if everything looks ok. I was just thinking about this reading another post talking about how many hours these engines can do. I have yet to hear of a 1.8l engine needing to be rebuilt on a boat due to being worn out by hours I’m sure there could be one but it is def not something we are hearing a ton about. The only main issues I have seen is the timing chain and a 2017 should have the upgraded chain so that should not be an issue either. Even still from what I understand Yamaha has been covering those outside of warranty as well.

My neighbor is a mechanic at one of the local marinas. He's not at all concerned either (says the guy that can fix anything). I'm curious what a year or two while I get to know the boat will cost. I'll post it up tomorrow when I know more.

My humble thoughts...

Based on the experienced shared by most everyone on this board with a 2017, and prior use of "same" engine in prior years....Your likelihood of needing repairs to engine is extremely low.

It is very early...if something was introduced in 2017 that causes the engines to grenade in 4 years...we won't know for a while... that is extremely unlikely.( but possible, which is why the warranty sells) How much disruption to your life would it be that the boat needed an expense/repair of 2-4K in the next 5 years? If you could bear it, I would consider passing on the warranty if it was me. It's most likely to need nothing, so you could save your money. If it would kill you to pay for something, that's when insurance/warranty offers a fixed fee now and no risk later. (BUT, when paying out of pocket for repairs you get to choose your service facilities, including independent shops that may have you back in the water in days vs weeks....) So because of reasons, I would consider passing on the warranty unless it was super cheap.

Lots of good points. Thanks. I'm not typically an "extended warranty" buyer. And if I owned from new and had no troubles I wouldn't even consider adding on. There's some fear of the unknown based on timing I'm trying to plan around.

Thanks again.

FYI for those curious. Add on cost, with no deductible and reimbursements for on the water failure/tow etc. is:
1 year $1,100
2 year $1,450
3 year $1,750
4 year $2,000

I was looking at a left over 2018 and it came with four years (or three were added as a factory incentive).
