usually go by time vs hours ... you do not want oil sitting ( especially in storage ) you want to change it periodically ..

I’ve put around 45hrs already this season usually cruise around 42 mph

I changed oil and filter at 10 hours then I at 40 hours - which happened to be the end of the season - otherwise it would have been at 50 hours. In between (yes I am ocd) I spun the oil filter off at 25 hours and put a new one on and topped-up the oil. With I/O rigs 350, 377, 383 and 502 Mercruiser Magnum engines I changed the oil every 50 hours and spun the filters, and topped-up the oil every 25 hours. The dealers who knew I did this always had people waiting for my sales/trades. When I sold our 2020 Yamaha 195SX I got my money back and had offers 5K over purchase price. Good maintenance always pays but good engine maintenance saves big $$$$ and pays big $$$$ at sales. Oil and filter changes are imo the absolute best preventative maintenance money you can ever spend.

Hey Canuck, when did you sell your 195? I didn't realize you sold it...get anything to replace it?

I just did the 100 hr change on our boat and expect to change oil again end of season around 150. We typically go out every weekend once she hits the water for the season through till October so we get a lot of use out of her for our short summers.

To clarify, you mean doing the oil change before storage to remove contaminants before sitting right? You are not changing oil periodically while in storage.

I think a lot depends on oil and how hard you run the oil. I changed oil at 30 hours on the clock I now have 100hr on the clock. I just checked it look new on the dip sticks(semi synthetic) 10/40 oil Mobil one filters, going to change when I get back to FL next month. I'll also check/read the plugs.....I think most people miss how important of a diagnosing tool the plugs can be in keeping track of the health of you engine.

Since these motors are new to me I will send a sample to Blackstone(30 bucks) just to look for anything out of the ordinary..........I expect to see a high gas reading in the oil just because my plugs showed an excessive amount of idling when I purchased the used 2013 SX240 with 23 hours on the clock. I have a 40min idle out of my canal and 40min back sometimes the idle is higher than the actual on plane run time. So I do expect blacker than normal plugs and higher than normal gas in oil. Don't think I will change plugs as she it starting vary quick and running vary smooth.

I might change oil to full synthetic(depends on Blackstone report) because synthetic has a much higher tolerance for such abuse the a conventional dyno OEM oil.

Hey @212s ..... sold it in April. The wife (aka the Admiral) allowed me to post it "just to see" what might happen. Posted late on a Saturday morning, it was sold (for what we paid for it) by Sunday morning. Had offers coming in for days after the add was pulled. Change of direction for us, more travelling - particularly to the Caribbean to scuba and around northern U.S. (N.Y. State) and southern U.S. (Florida, Arizona, Nevada) and of course, Ontario. Relaxation of COVID changed our goals and it was probably the best Summer to sell a boat that you could want. So, sold it! Friends with boats so can get out pretty much whenever for a few beers or gas $. No plans for a boat in the future but (as you can see - lol) I do change status fast. If we see it and like we buy it - Ha Ha. Super glad you are getting so much use out of your boat. The 212s is a REALLY nice boat. We may have passed you once as we were coming into Clarks and you were leaving but I was watching the fairway very closely as there have been a lot of near misses and a few hits there by boaters entering the main fairway from side slips. Hope the rest of July and the Fall are great boating weather for you. Might still see you on the water as friends have boats in Gananoque at Clarks. It's a small world as I can look right out my condo window and see the 2020 SX195 I just sold as the owners are slipping it at Tunnel Bay in Brockville. Attached is a picture - it is the boat with the gray bimini top "up" - should be down when not in use as they get covered with bird stuff etc. but it's no longer my boat.
