06 Yamaha 230sx , radio went out and I know there are hundreds of marine radios but I want one that will plug and play directly to my stock JBL radio so I can still use my steewheel controls and the swim deck controls . Anyone have a link that would me find the radio I need ?

Good luck with that...but you are correct, the JBL in my 07 was a POS and did not work. I replaced it all with Kenwood and added a Kenwood amp and replaced the speakers with polk, my old ones had holes in them. It was not plug and play but cut, crimp and heat shrink for the speaker wires. All the Kenwood equipment was plug and play.

It was a year ago, I do not have any links handy, I would have to dig into the file cabinet for reciepts. My JBL had no steering wheel controls. The model numbers are listed in the modifications just above my signature pic.

In the first generation 230s the head unit is on the passenger side and a remote is at the Captains chair.

The best solution I have seen for this is using a Fusion head unit with the rectangular Fusion remote.

Thanks Bruce , looks like I'm going to have to change radios and both remotes

Probably just change the radio and swim deck remote and find something else to put in the hole where the captains remote is

@Hollywood when I get home later I will check the install diagram for the remote, I think I remember seeing an optional splitter that allows 2 remotes.

Fusion certainly allows for multiple remotes.

You might even be able to install one of their compact head units into the helm. For example https://www.fusionentertainment.com/marine/products/stereo-units/ms-ra205

Another option is to go headless. I am likely to move this direction over the winter. Several manufacturers offer "black box" systems that are controlled by a phone or tablet with no display.

For a couple of years I have used a Raspberry Pi (small computer) to play music on my boat. Until recently that music played through the Fusion head unit's excellent amplifier. But I added a couple of small class D amplifiers earlier this year so all the head unit does at this point is to offer the ability to listen to FM which we never do.

That's an idea I hadn't thought about. I would be fine with not having the control by the steering wheel but I deff like the swim platform control for sure.

@Hollywood, my intention is to find a waterproof Android phone with a floating case to use to control the playlist and volume. That way we can take it ashore or out in the water when we are anchored in a cove and I can pass it around while under way. I have a long range WiFi AP on the boat so it should work several hundred feet away.

Currently I am using http://moodeaudio.org/ on the Pi.

That's a great write up and great idea for the grill but it's just me and the wife usually on the boat so for now I don't want to cut on the boat I would rather use the swim deck table mount hole , any suggestions on the best (somewhat cheap) marine type grills ? Are there any that mount where I'm talking about or do I have to just put the grill on the table ?

I started using a ~$80 Coleman grill sitting on the table.

I am so much happier with the current ~$150 (on sale) Magma Cabo.

Kuuma grills are similar to Magma but less expensive.
