rope in jets

Super Bummed Out.
Bought a 2014 Yamaha limited 2 weeks ago. We took kids out the other day threw tube tow rope into water floated boat over it and sucked rope into both jets. Could not get rope out took to dealers to fix. Big $$$ just by idleing over rope I bent both shafts on the jets. going to be a good 2 weeks for repair and about $3600.00 for dealer to fix. Can you believe this ?

Replace both shafts on the motors. I am really dumb when it comes to mechanics. Yamaha Is closed until Monday due to Holiday. So cannot order parts until then. My wife is Super Pissed off as I am too. Just wondering if this happened to any body else. I only had props never owned A jet before.

I was thinking the same thing. I realize labor is high but still seems expensive .

There’s only two cables to disconnect and 4 bolts that hold the pump nozzle assembly on. Then take the shaft to a PWC repair shop and have them swap the impeller over. Make sure the seal at the engine is good and you should be all set.

Any mechanically inclined person you know could help you it’s not that hard. Getting the impeller off the shaft and pressed on is the hard part so just take it somewhere they do it all the time (pwc repair shop) do the rest yourself. Buy a service Manuel and follow the directions.

Yes, this sounds high, but it does depend on how much damage was done. If you wrapped up enough to bend the shaft, you may have had enough to damage the fiberglass in the intake or on the bottom. Then I could see it being that much.

I’m not mechanically inclined at all and I’ve learned to take these pumps apart. It’s very simple and you’ll be able to save a lot of money on labor if all you need are parts. Not sure if I have the right model for you but check out parts 13-24 on this site. This may be all you need to spend, X’s 2.

1. you might want to post your location on your profile and see if there are people close to you who might be able to help. A 6pack can go a long way.

2. I say even you are not mechanically inclined you should still tackle the projects It serves you well for not being careful and will be helpful in the future.

3. I had a friend tow today with an outboard he did not give a rat's a*s about where the towrope was whereas we have to be super careful. When the time came for the kids to start jumping in the water they all come to ours....... Having a jet might require awareness when there is a rope in the water, but not working about your kids jumping on that propeller is something that both you and your wife will fall in love very soon. I know it is cliche, but wait and see.

Wow! That’s very expensive.it sucks that sooo much debris is in the water. Ropes and stuff. Sorry you picked up something.. maybe you can call your insurance?

If they can’t help you then you can post up your location. Someone can help you for much less $$

Many of us (most?) have sucked up a rope. I don't recall anyone ever bending a shaft. Please ask for the damaged parts to be returned to you. Take as many pictures as possible of the damage. Insurance may cover this. Don't give up on that boat. It will provide a lot of fun family memories as you get to know it.

I’ve only ever sucked up one rope and it was while the boat was idling/low wake mode - caught it really quickly (even before engine light went on). and we were able to untangle it from both the top clean out port and a little help under the boat with taking a few dives under the boat (didn’t have to pull the boat out) to pull the rope through. About 10-15 minutes. Get really lucky. We even managed to save the tow rope.
Can’t imagine that type of engine repair and damage that you posted .......

I agree with this.
However, cracking the intake tunnels is entirely possible along with messing up the intermediate bearing housing. If the engines were not turned off immediately... and the rope cocooned around (both!) shafts...

The mechanic may not have used proper explanation.
If shafts have to be replaced, that is a big-ish job because of the main bearings in the stator segment. I’ve never done that myself or had it done for me, yet, but if the shafts are really bent... the damage is likely extensive.
I would think a PWC shop maybe way less expensive.

Yea i totaled them up about 1900.00. So I guess that is where the $3600 comes in from shop When it is fixed I am going to be so tight when operating it not sure if I can ever relax when on it again, Such a shame it is the happy place I go to, THE BOAT.
