Just took delivery of my Scarab 255 Open G. This is my first jet boat and am surprised with steering. At 5mph in the channel the steering is really delicate and needs constant adjusting. Is this normal?

Yes it is. Typical jet boat. Also a very nice boat you have there.

You will get used to it and become very proficient.

It just takes some getting used to.
If you really want to improve it, add the cobra jet steering system.
Congrats on the new boat! Pics please!

FYI I added the cobra steering fins to my Scarab 255 Impulse ID it does VERY little at idle and docking speeds. I was surprised after seeing all the good reviews but I think most of those were the Yamaha set ups with more fins. Worth $200 I guess but don't expect much, maybe better on a smaller Scarab?? BEST mod is the trim tabs I added, was more than a bit of a challenge with engine coolers and congested engine compartment but they improve ride in chop and rough waters 100% !!!! ONLY DOWNFALL, TOTALLY UNEXPECTED until I thought about it, is now my reverse is greatly slowed down to almost nothing due to reverse force from buckets now hits the trim plates!! Got use to it, but need to use EXTREME CAUTION in docking situations with lack of reverse force, but totally worth the ride difference !!! Good luck !!! We love our 255 ID !!

@PGregoire I have the same rotax drive system as you, and this is totally normal. I have noticed that steering is much more responsive when in neutral. When you're in forward, and you crank the wheel all the way right, there's a 4-5 second delay before anything happens. When in neutral, its almost instant response.

When i'm navigating marinas and small rivers, i keep popping it in and out of neutral when i need to make large steering corrections. doesn't really affect speed as i still have momentum from being in forward, so plenty of control still.

I have a single engine. i imagine it would work the same for your twin set up? give it a shot and let me know. Congrats on the boat!
