Not posted in awhile but wanted to get the word out as, since I don't live in the north, I wasn't aware this could be such a huge problem. Recently we got about 12" of snow over the course of a few days and apparently some of the marinas in the region aren't equipped to handle that much snow. The photos below are from Grider Hill Marina, Lees Ford Marina on Lake Cumberland and a couple marinas on Dale Hollow Lake and Norris Lake. So if you store your boat under a covered slip at a marina, something to think about.

Not my boat in any of the photos, mine is in the garage.

Phew. I was worried.

Yes, snow is heavy. This is why I recommend that everyone move to Texas. Or Hawaii, but Texas is closer.

x2 on painful to look at!!

Wow that needs a dislike button!

Snow loads...or ice loads sometimes, I guess that many marinas are just not built to withstand the extra weight. Sorry to see that!

It happens in Texas too! I couple years ago it was ice that did the same thing at the lake we usually go to.

Two years ago Highport at Texoma had the docks (normally at 3 feet or so above waterline) at waterline due to the heavy weight of the Ice on the roof. Hate to see that... I hate ice storms!

Of course that is nothing compared to the above pics...

I hope insurance (either the marina or boat owner) will cover those damages.

Ouch. In canada every roof has to be built to withstand a certain snow load, based on typical snowfall in the area + a huge safety factor. We can still get those kind of collapses on old roofs if the snow is far greater than normal. When I was a kid we used to wait until there was 5' accumulated on the roof of the house before we would shovel it off. Cam.
