Starboard engine rattling - any thoughts?

Port engine sounds smooth and normal.
Port Engine Idle

Starboard engine has a rattle
Starboard Engine Idle

Starboard Engine again with a little throttle
Starboard engine at 2k

I changed oil and plugs. No engine alarms. No noticeable loss of power. Was out on a 6 mile run yesterday and didn’t notice this. I heard it at home when I was changing oil and getting ready to put away for the winter last night.

Any thoughts on what is causing it?

I’d check the impeller and housing to see if it looks like it is starting to Rub/ all tight with no signs of wear.

Well I looked through the intake and the ring around the impeller looks scored like the impeller is rubbing. Actually both look this way.

yes it is the pump liner swelling from dissimilar metal corrosion and making contact with the impeller, very common .

What is the rattling, is it the impeller scrapping against or hitting the liner that is making the noise?

high spots in the liner contacting the impeller if you put the boat away you may find that it will not turn over nest year the longer they sit the worse they get I did away with tem and went to nylon pump liners . no more issues since I run in salt water and do a ton of hours.
Many a boat and jet ski have been sold because the owner thought the engine was blown when it was just a locked up impeller in a pump liner that was swollen . Do a search Yamaha is now using nylon liners finally starting with 2019 models.

Well thanks for that tip. I just winterized it and it was going in until next season with no access. It sounds like I should try to address this. I did just find another thread you commented on this same issue.

Looks like I can buy a new OEM version or the one with the plastic liner.

will I need to replace anything else or just the liner?

I believe there are several sources for the pump section that has a replaceable liner, I like the fact that if you have the pump section you can replace the liner only rather than the entire pump section. I beat the crap out of my liners and have no issues.. As for what you need to replace it depends on the condition of your impellers . I would check with people who have made the change to the replicable nylon liners and see where they purchased them and what they paid.

I would also pull the impeller cone and check the bearings. Water intrusion could have washed away the grease causing your bearings to wear. This would cause your impeller shaft to start wobbling which in turn would cause your impeller to contact the wear ring.

I also thought I saw water on the engine bay floor. Have you been properly greasing your intermediate bearing?

Nope - sitting in the tube with EZ locks sitting in top. Always good to check the easy stuff. I will put them in.

Looks like I’m pulling my pumps to do some inspection.

There was water on the floor but it was from my hose connection leaking. I was sure someone would catch that

I would say both of the engines sound "normal" to me, lol. Yeah, when you first hear those beasts go with engine hatch open... some people are about to have a heart attack...

I'm sure you know that, but just in case - the oil cooler bolts in 2010/2011 1.8s can break, never a recall, a known issue so something to keep an eye on.

Pulling the pump tonight then I will start it up and see if the noise goes away.

Well I pulled the pump and the sound didn’t go away. Pump looked good, impeller looks new and shaft spins smooth and easy.

To me it sounds like its rpm is low and it has a random missfire

Swap coils from other engine to eliminate that as an issue. A coil could be missing once in a while
