lesson 1: have a sharp knife or blade on board
lesson 2: be sure boat is in N when starting engine, and do't panic thinking they no longer work because of the rope issue.
lesson 3: pull up the freaking anchor before thinking all is good and it's time to carry on.

Good day regardless.

I am learning.

Welcome to the club. Be there, done that, don’t want to repeat it.

Did you get the jetboaters.net achievement yet.

Well then I definitely earned it today. Here is the icing on the cake: I cut the rope out with basically pliers, struggling with hitting a pier because anchor won't grab, then the engines won't start. Why? Because my dumb ass left the throttles in F.

OK, got it lets go. Vrooom. Guess what? Anchor still down.

Over all an awesome day.

I guess I am completely dumb but the link, my profile...nowhere that I can see is there a trophy. :)

Two quick notes, the engines won't start unless you are in "N"
And there is no true neutral, you can suck up a rope in neutral as well as forward or reverse, as there is no gear box on these boats. If the motor is running, the Cuisinart is chopping!

I honestly think this may be the most common way for folks to eat ropes, they think in "n" means nothing is spinning. #1 tip, assign someone other than the captain to monitor the rope at all times. (sorry for the hindsight)

Out of curiosity how did it happen?

When I tow, I tell the spotter their #1 job is to ensure the rope does not go under the boat. I tell them their #2 and #3 priorities are also that the rope does not go under the boat..... then somewhere around 4 or 5 is the person in the water.

To clarify, the "N" issue was after I cut out the rope. At that point Dad was flustered and his young daughters wanted to get on with boating. Dad says the engines won't start and the rope issue being a first, thought it was due to that. Nope, simply not in N. 10-15 minutes there before I realized the issue.

We were getting ready to anchor at a beauty side of the river...same time bringing girls in off the tube. Rope went under at low speed as maneuvering. I knew right away from reading here and gave my daughter a lesson on how I messed up by not stressing that enough with her. Dad was wrong. Dad's fault. We got out and learned a lot. Good day of boating on the water regardless!

So...the next day after my first rope sucking incident I am mowing the lawn. On the JD X570 humming around as usual. Same routine for several years. This time, however, I somehow get too close to the kid's soccer goal net buried in the grass off a bit from the frame. Vroomf! Sucked up the soccer net jamming up the big JD. Go figure. The very next day. I'll need to take the deck off but I needed an annual blade replacement anyway. Half the rope net is tangled up outside the mowing deck and it of course will not spin without a fit. Coincidence?

Not sure who is looking out for me...

I had this happen to me yesterday. Had 2 people on rope duty and two people tell me I was clear to start engines. Started engines and boom, rope gets sucked up really bad. Some people just can’t do a simple job.

Hope They never want to go on your boat again
