I need to replace the carpet on my bunk boards and was thinking about replacing the boards themselves with something rot-resistant/proof. Thinking of using ultimate bunk boards, but covering them with carpet. Has anyone done this or found other plastic lumber that works?

Several people added carpet to UBBs that were causing gelcoat damage.

My opinion is that the UBBs are less rigid causing point loads and potential damage where they are supported.

I chose high grade spruce lumber when I replaced my bunks four years ago and they still look like new - https://jetboaters.net/threads/replaced-bunks-on-mfi-trailer.1927/

I avoided treated pine as it often warps and I was concerned the treatment might soak through the carpet.

The bunks were inexpensive and quick to replace.

The main problem I saw with UBBs is that the plastic didn't provide a solid enough material for lag bolts to get a bite on. As they were used, the bolts worked loose allowing the boards to flex even more. As they flexed, the ends of the boards and the points where the supports were rubbed the gel coat off.

If you go this route, I recommend drilling through the board, countersinking the topside and using nuts and bolts to secure the boards.

I just replaced my plastic bunks as they were causing damage to the gel coat. One situation where one of the corners lifted up and caused a nice scratch in the gel coat. My dealer replaced them with marine carpet. Haven't had issues since

Thanks. I may have been getting ahead of myself, as I'm not even sure the boards themselves are bad, but though that while I'm replacing the carpet it might make sense to just go ahead and replace the boards too. @Bruce, did you get the spruce at a lumber store or was it available at a big box home center?
