Would unclipping the spring that holds the Cobra fins allow the fins to rise at speed?

I thought they did rise, and the spring is only a tensioner to hold them down at trawling speed?

I was unaware Cobras were spring loaded...are you speaking of Thrust Vectors maybe?

The New Cobra super-venom-ultimate-XL fins are spring loaded to keep them down and secured in no wake mode..... They rise up at speed, and as an added bonus they are adjustable in depth to get just the right feel for you..... Un-springing them would allow them to free float and probably wouldn't be good at all......Jeff is pretty highly sprung as it is.....

Lol, good one Magic. I think even Jeff would appreciate that.

Ok, after fiddling with it, it looks like the spring should be engaged at all times.

To get the fins to rise up at speed you need to reverse the actuator and set it only in the top setting , the spring must be loaded to get them to come down. The instructions have this covered.
There are several drawbacks to having your fins rise up on the water exiting the pump.
The first is the lack of time they operate, ONLY at very low speeds like no wake or minimum wake speeds.
A second thing to consider is when the fins are riding on top of the water exiting the pump, if you operate in rough water the pump can lose prime the fins will drop then go back up rapidly and repeatedly when the pump loads and unloads, this is not the ideal situation. Then there is the issue with safety for people in tubes or on a board, skies, etc. If a part ever comes loose the water exiting the pump makes a pretty good cannon to propel that part behind the boat, this applies to ANY manufacturers systems that are operated in that fashion.
The best way to obtain a slow speed only operation with Cobra Ultimates or even the Magnum steering units is to stagger the fins on a twin engine boat , setting the outer fins up and the inner fins down, this will kick in steering assistance when the boat is off plane, and stop assisting when it is back up on plane. This way it is always predictable and the numerous settings allow you to pick the position that makes you the most comfortable. On single engine boats setting the fins up evenly to the position you prefer gives you the control to operate in your comfort zone. I have some videos for explaining some of the settings etc. Also in either the down settings or the up at speed settings you will not experience any wake disruptions or water spraying up behind the boat I also show this on some of the videos.
