what does the bottom look like, is it threaded? does it have a flange or lip?

Easy, that's a quarter. As for the other thing, I have no idea. Looks like some kind of a plug. I'd throw that away and keep the quarter.






sorry, I'm in a silly mood and couldn't resist. ;) I'm sure somebody here will know what it is.
 
I want to say it is a plug that sits in between cylinders 2 and 3 next to the spark plugs.
I think you have a winner. Based on the parts picture below it looks like it matches what @thcole said.

The quarter, not a damn thing anymore. Can't even play a game of pinball with it.

The plug is useful, probably for a similar size hole.
 
I believe that the R1 motor has a vent or sensor in that area. Ask somebody that has the motorcycle version.
