I'm on a Bourbon kick right now. I try to get something different every time I go to the package store. My favorites so far are: Basil Hayden's, Woodford Reserve, Redemption, Mitchter's, and Elijah Craig. The one that really disappointed was Russell's 10 year reserve. Small batch by Jimmy Russell who is a master distiller for wild turkey. I hated it. I normally drink with one big ice cube, but for the bad stuff I usually just make an old fashioned with it.

    What's in your glass??

I am a rye guy. Basil Hayden’s dark rye and Braddock Oak rye are my current favorites. Can’t go wrong with Basil Hayden in any variety. Always neat in a simple high ball glass for me.

Living near KY we have quite the selection. Tons of stuff is made within 20-30 miles from me. Lots in Bardstown, as well as downtown Louisville. Bourbon tourism is a thing now, kinda crazy. They have "bourbon tours" all over the place. Basically hop on a bus and go on tours of distilleries all day with plenty of samples while there and along the way. I haven't done one yet, but have a birthday party scheduled in March that has plans for an "urban bourbon" theme. Should be interesting.

I like Woodfords Reserve. Blantons gets great reviews, but is just OK IMO. As I sit here and type I've got Four Roses in the Yeti with Coke Zero mixed over it. Four Roses is about $12/bottle locally and is a nice smooth mixer. Pappy Van Winkle always makes a big stir locally, but Weller is the same thing in a different bottle. Old Forrester Birthday Bourbon is another big deal, as the location it'll be sold is a highly guarded secret. I installed a lot of the equipment in the new downtown Louisville location for them, got to be decent friends with the guy running the show, and the best I could get was a "You know I can't tell you that" when I pressed for information on where I could find it ahead of time.

Had a buddy that did a "bourbon tasting" for his 40th birthday a few years ago. Full deal....had waiters, horsdeuvers (however you spell that), and had the guests dress in suit/tie/evening gown. Had about 5 different bourbons ranging from several hundred dollars a bottle to $8 a bottle. I learned that I like getting drunk and I like coke....I picked "colonel lee" as my top pick. it was kinda greasy and had a turpentine tinge to it, but it mixed really well with coke and was only $8/bottle.

I'm a wild Turkey or Jim Bean Black guy. I think I've drink the majority of bourbons out there from a $200 bottle of Jim Beam all the way down to ancient age. Every year a friend of mine in North Carolina does a bourbon tasting. It's surprising some of the cheaper bourbons taste the best. Never judge a bottle by its price tag. We drink a $75 bottle of Jefferson ocean and it was probably the worst bourbon I've ever drank.

@BigN8 , right up the road from you, in Valley View, Texas, on the square, is the Whiskey Hollow Distillery and Tasting room. And another place close by you, the Gaylord Texan, one of the Gaylord Properties, named Whiskey ahollows Premium Bourbon, the top bourbon in America. It is Texas Gold. And it is my bourbon of choice! (You can get it at Total Wine too) pay them a visit, they make shine and rum as well as a shooting whiskey. There is a vineyard on the square too, Firelight Vineyards. They are young but a fun evening not far from home.

I was at total wine the other day and they were doing tastings of Whiskey Hollow. I didn't think much of it at the time, but maybe I should give it another try with the way I drink bourbon at home, over a cube of ice in a high ball glass

I’ve been drinking Knob Creek for a while now, I really like it mixed with Coke or just over ice. I haven’t tried too many that I can actually enjoy it alone over ice, but this I can.

I had just finished my nightly drink when I opened this up:). I’m in Italy, so I’m ahead of most of you....just Incase you were thinking it was a little early to be finishing at this hour:)

    In my order of preference:

    Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
    1792
    Woodford Reserve
    Four Roses Single Barrel

I don't do any of the extensive stuff as I have a hard time paying per shot what I could get a good bottle for.

High West has a few good ones (rye or bourbon)
Templeton Rye is pretty good as well
+1 on the Woodfords, can't go wrong there
+1 on the 1792 as well

If you are in the MN/WI area here are a few that I have liked from local distillers
    Border Bourbon (New Richmond WI)
    J. Carver Bourbon or Rye (Waconia MN)

not sure but isn't templeton Rye a continuation of a recipe from the prohibition days, and Al Capone's crew....

duh!!! internet info at my fingertips. cool history. in Iowa too.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Templeton_Rye

I found that stuff to have a really strong "bite" good, but more of the "knock it back and forget about the day" kinda way LOL

Had Angels Envy this evening at a bar. Pretty good stuff. Not sure I liked the $16.50 price though.
