Aloha Gang,

Sorry in advance a little longer thread but it will be worth reading I promise. I decide on Monday afternoon 4/22 to plan a fish/dive expedition with the boys for Tuesday/yesterday 4/23. As I seen there was going to be a brief break and a small window of nice conditions. Made some calls to see who was down to go, told them we’re going on the new Yammy(AR240) not old faithful(LS2000). So she’s not totally setup yet no GPS/Fishfinder Combo unit, no trimtabs, basically stock. All the boys were still down, so I committed and said let’s do it.👍🏽

I Made a call to my cousin who runs a Zodiac Tour out of Kekeha Harbor where i’m planning to go out of, and ask him if he had a morning tour and if I could escort him and tag along going around the corner of the island. They run the shorelines like 100yards off shore, staying inside of the chop @ 25-30mph. and he knows we’re all the shallow reef heads r and when to cut outside. This is on the west side of the Island and I normally would hit these grounds from the Northside and make the trip around. It’s a shorter drive towing the boat. He told me yeah come should be nice in the morning, winds will kick up around lunch so best to head back before then. Going is all downwind, but get one southswell 4-5ft. So coming back after lunch going be UGLY. I got major butterfly’s in my stomach, cause u don’t want to be coming back up wind in a 4-5ft swell 15-20mph trade winds. Even on a closed cabin dedicated fishing boat that’s not a comfortable/Dry ride, let alone being on a open bow light Yamaha AR240. But I still felt like we just make the run down do our thing and head back early, plus my cousin would be nearby on his tour.

So I told the boys meet me down Kekaha Harbor we launching at 5:45am and we leaving at 6am. My cousins tour was running a little late couple of the tourist hadn’t shown up yet. It was 6:15am so I told him I’m going to leave and start my run down to the grounds. He told me go he’ll find me, just shoot outside at Davison’s and Nohili Points get super shallow reefs on the inside. But it’s low tide and because of the swell u going see the breakers on the shallow reefs, which is good cause can see where to avoid.

We did our pule(prayer)🙏🏽 and left the harbor got her on plane and up around 5500rpms averaging 30mph ran downwind about 100yrd off shore. Winds were dead so it was a easy ride down just had to slow down from time to time cause we were jumping the large rolling swells. Got to the first spot outside Polihale(Queen’s Pond), told the boys suit up I’ll boatman first. They jumped in the water 30-35ft deep was a little murky, but had some fish. Told them go shoot us some dinner!👍🏽

They shot some Moana Kali(Goat fish) and some Mu(Emperor fish). Then we moved to the next spot a little deeper up current hoping to find cleaner water and less current. We hit the jackpot water was crystal clear and no current. It’s was in about 50-60ft of water, so we were hoping to see some Uku(Jobfish), but had a few Ulua(GT Giant Trevale) one kept bothering my friend so he shot it, stoned it dead. Which is great cause no fight and no bent shaft or ruined gear. We got BLOOD on the Deck weighed in at 77.8lbs. We got a small one too 15lbs. which r great raw sashimi style.🐟

We decided cause visibility was so good to run outside in deeper water to do some Blue Water hunting maybe run into some Mahimahi(Dorado) or Ono(Wahoo). Did that for like an hour so and nothing. Just when we were going to call it quits, this beautiful Huge easily over 20ft Whale Shark rolled up. I been in the water my whole life and never seen one, only on TV. It stayed with us for like a half hour circling the boat, allowing all of us to interact. It was a “Once in a Life time” moment, truly magical felt Blessed.🙏🏽

It was now almost noon, told the boys let’s start heading back. I was a little worried cause we were a little late and I knew as soon as we got around the corner we were going to hit the trade winds and the swell. Just then my cousin rolled up to check on us as he was heading back too. Told him let’s do it. We were truly Blessed cause the trade wind held off long enough for us the make it almost all the way back to the Harbor. We made one last stop at a spot called Inter’s, on a deep ledge about 70ft that dropped to 110ft. As the boys was in the water the winds shifted making the water start to get ugly. Told the boys it’s time to go. I couldn’t go as fast as I wanted because of the swell but wasn’t UGLY chop/break yet. Just the last mile or so the winds started blowing harder trades and got sloppy. Was a bumpy wet ride the last 15-20mins of our trip, but I still felt ok cause I could see Kekaha harbor in the distance. It was a awesome day out, one that I will remember for the rest of my life. If u read this whole thread hope it was enjoyable for u, here’s some pics of our adventure.👍🏽🙏🏽🤙🏽

Aloha and Mahalo Ke Akua,

Wow. Just Wow.

There are whale sharks at the aquarium in Atlanta and I remember UPS (I work for) helping to move them from Taipei. They are really magnificent and must have been quite a wonder to see in the open wild.

Nice haul of fish. The Giant Trevale is pretty impressive.

I dove that tank in the ATL aquarium. Lots of fun. They will also let you snorkel.

@rkim808 Beautiful adventure, beautiful memories. The Whale Shark was a sign from Kanaloa. You are truly blessed Sir.

P.S. Trim tabs will help the ride in choppy conditions. You won't regret the install.

Wow, what an experience!
Amazed that the whale shark stuck around for so long. Most critters we've met diving tend to scamper after a few minutes at most (with the exception of a black tip shark in the Bahamas that followed us around for a whole tank dive...)
And while we've been thinking of a dive trip to the Caribbean to see whale sharks, we love Hawaii so we just might have to change destinations!
