Did some dredging in Glenn Canyon. It was long drive back to Lee's Ferry with the 15Hp kicker.

Sucked up a bucket full of cobble in the work boat. I was dragging about 400 ft. of 1.25 inch tramway cable across the channel and my harness closed down on the intake "cleaner" while I was at full power. It was quite the racket.

Edit: pump (liners) all survived without a scratch.... both impellers grenaded.

Wow. Is it normal for them to fall apart like that, even under those circumstances? Wasn't expecting that.

If I were filming a horror movie I'd have to write a scene just for that. The sight of it runs chills down my spine!

Good to know the impellers will shear to protect the hardware upstream in the horsepower chain, they aint easy or cheap, but easier and cheaper than the rest of the drive-train!

I blame poor design on the loss of the impellers. The Hamilton two-stage pumps are designed to digest a fair amount of debris and could be the reason the clean out port is useless. I doubt that even a small child could reach far enough into the pump to clear debris. Besides being too small, the clean out port is about a half foot below the water line. The bilge pump and a Honda 1 inch water pump did not even come close to keeping up with the geyser through the opened clean out. I tried all the tricks but could not get the pump cleared.

I'm not sure I understand this......cobble? harness closed down?. did you suck up the cable?

400 ft of 1.25 cable is about 1/2 a ton....dragging that thru the water must of been tough.

@justason - 50% of the intake grate is spring loaded and can be pushed away (about 8 inches) from the intake via a handle on the "swim platform". The system works pretty good for getting vegetation off the intake but should never be used while under power. Anyway, I could tell from the pump cavitation that the intake was fouled but I was able to drag the cable to within a about 20 yards of the opposite bank where we had an electric winch attached to a tree to finish the pull. While turning the boat upstream the tow harness attached to the cable rolled across the "intake cleaner" opening up half the grate. That is when all of the cobble that was sucked against the grate got ingested and shredded the impellers. Immediate loss of power and the 7 ft per second river velocity spun the boat around 180 in the blink of an eye. We had water coming over the transom before we got the harness cut loose. Crazy day.
