I was curious what our jets looked like while we are driving the boat. So last weekend while my wife was driving I put the GoPro on a pole and filmed out the back for a couple of seconds. The boat was in some decent size waves, sorry if it bounces around too much.

I was surprised that the jets don't seem to be completely under water. For some reason I guess I had just always figured that they would be.

For even more fun, lay down and have someone hold your ankles while you hang your head over and watch. But I recommend calm water at WOT.

And yes, the first time I did it I was surprised how much of the transom is up and out of the water.

Typical of jet drives to be 1/2 in 1/2 out.

I don't think the jets are "in" the water. Rather the water comes up from the bottom edge of the ride plate to meet the pump which is mounted above the bottom edge of the hull. At speed the pumps are basically 100% out of the water.

Try skiing or boarding or surfing or tubing behind the boat. You can easily see the jets are out of the water when going faster than no wake speed.

These type of jets are sometimes referred to as "Hamilton Jets". Water jet propulsion existed before, but it was Sir Hamilton who discovered a huge increase in performance when the jet nozzle was positioned above the waterline rather than below it. Our boats take advantage of this design.
