I hate to ask, but I assume that is $619 each? If so, that's enough to piss me off a little.

Another questions regarding warranty, to verify that the warranty is valid or expired, who do you contact and what information do you provide (I assume your hull id#)? Since I bought the boat used, is there anyway to know if the previous owner had this done under warranty?

If you did not transfer a warranty through the dealership you most likely do not have one. You can check your bolt 3rd bolt down. If that bolt is totally different from the others with a bigger head, it is most likely done.

I inquired when I purchased the boat through the dealership and they had said there was no warranty remaining. That said, I basically double check everything because many times people are just to lazy to do the work and give you the answer that requires them to do the least amount of effort. That said, 99% certain I do not have one. I will be pulling the boat out of storage in a couple of weeks and this has been on my prep list all winter. Warranty or not, of it is a known defective part, the manufacturer should step up.....but we know they won't.

Totally concur that a recall should be done on the oil coolers for 2010 and 2011. Some with a good dealership and a bit of fighting with mother Yamaha have gotten resolve even without warranty but not all were that fortunate. Yamaha will not publicly confirm there is a problem although the informed know better.

Just knowing that they changed the oil coolers and part numbers confirms they know there was a problem.

Yes Mark that is $619 per unit, just the part. I may extend my warranty just for this reason but regardless missed time on the water during our short seasons isnt covered. I could do the job myself as fast as I can procure the parts and a warranty is temporary anyway so I'm not decided yet. At 150 hours I feel like I have a ticking timebomb, and my warranty expires next week. It does seem like I've seen more 2010 boats post about failures than 2011s but who knows. Also there is a lot more information now on this than there was even last year. The one thing I will do before season starts is loosen and retorque the bolts to spec. You may want to so the same.

You can call any dealer service department and ask for the service records for your hull #.

Another thought, do you have the option to purchase the same warranty? Actually I looked it up and it looks like you dont. From the contract I have: For used vehicles... the used vehicle is eligible only if the Yamaha dealer sells you the used vehicle and the YES contract on the same day.

If you are out of warranty and replace the cooler yourself expect to pay between $700 and $800 for the parts per engine. If the dealer does it the total should be in the $1200 to $1300 per engine.

Another way to check which cooler you have, other than having a different third bolt down (you can tell by the head) is look for a raised arrow on the coolers face pointing to that bolt/hole. If you have an arrow chances are its a newer style cooler.

If yamaha isn't going to stand behind their defective product and you are about to run out of warranty I would sheer off one bolt if not both and hand them replaced.

I have problems with mine at 50 hours. The dealer replace the second one under warranty at the same time because they said the covers defective causing the bold to kink when over torqued.

Pulled my port number three bolt and it looks good. Ordered replacements from boats.net just to be safe.

Of course they knew there was a problem and if your boat wasn't under warranty, then you had a problem.

Joined the club today! Bought my boat on consignment at the dealer.....since it was run through the the dealer, I was allowed to purchase up to two years YES warranty. I did just because of the known oil cooler issues. I check my coolers after every outing. Sure enough, checked today and third bolt down, starboard side is gone. No oil leaking as of yet. Im going to call the dealer Tuesday when they open and see how well they step up to the plate. Hopefully I can get both replaced.

Friend of mine with a 240 sx had his port side bolt sheared also, just had it replaced last week. Starboard side was fined.

Spoke to my dealer today. They didn't seem to know too much regarding an existing issue so I had to explain it to them. Service guy said he was going to contact Yamaha and request that both coolers changed. Now just waiting to hear back.

So I'm reading that this is 2010 boats, would this affect my 2011 242?

@Cory from everything that I have read on this forum and the other over the past couple years... It has/can effect the 2011's but it has been very, very few (at least within the forum community, I can't say that for all 2011 boats). It is predominately in the 2010.
