Hello, We are in the market for a new Jetski. We are family of 5, with 3 kids. Need the power to tow a tube, but probably wont be going racing 24/7 with the kids. We were previously looking at a VX Cruiser HO, but since they are out of stock almost everywhere (closest one in stock is over 10 hours away and would arrive at the dealer in a month or two.), We've decide to look at the GPs mostly because of availability and some of their extra features. We're looking at a GP1800r HO right now, and we're probably going to buy one. However, I have a few concerns. First of all, it looks much more aggressive, not as comfortable, and seat looks slightly smaller compared to the VX (will post pictures for reference). Would that be a problem with 3 kids? Is it a really big difference between the two? If not, I really don't think it would be worth it to drive 10 hours+ for a VX Cruiser HO. Fellow Waverunner owners, please help me out!

Thanks in Advance.

Welcome aboard! I believe the 2021 VX and GP1800r use the same (or very similar hull). I have attached a screen grab from the Waverunner website, comparing the dimensions. The GP1800r is lighter due to the hull composite, and includes a few more features that are geared towards performance, and is less than an inch shorter. @Ronnie just picked one up, and he has a thread on here with his impressions.

Both skis can fit/ride 3. The “Cruiser” has a seat that is more geared towards comfort for 2-3, with the “lip” on the cushion towards the rear for extra support.

You ask if this would be an issue with 3 kids - I’m not sure I’m following... “As in 5 onboard”, or “Riding with two kids behind the driver”. I believe both ski’s include a “nanny mode” in which the RPMs are limited so that if someone less experienced is riding/driving they will be limited to ~40-45 vs 60-65mph.

I have a 2016 VX Cruiser HO (prior design), and with 3 onboard, it’s doable for getting from point A to B, but it’s most enjoyable to ride solo.

I would defiantly make the drive. One fuel a. A night worth of hotel are like $250.
The over thing to keep in mind you don’t really need the 1.8HO to be able to tow. Without knowing much about you let me tell you about us.

I have a 2015 V1 sport ( MR1 engine base engine). I am 210lbs and my wife is 100ish, we have 2 kids 9 and 7. The ski also has about 50lbs of sound proofing ( I know stupid).
We tow the kids on a double tube all the time.

There have been a couple of times I have felt under powered but those have not been while tubing. As matter of fact we even had 3 kids being towed in the past ( 8,8 and 6 year old).

If I was buying a new ski right now ( which I would had prices not been crazy) I would get the VX deluxe with the TR1 engine. Why you ask ? I think the fine has enough power how what I need, cheaper and longer range. If you ever decide to brave the gulf stream and go to Bimini on it the extra range will not hurt. We typically put fuel every 5 hours or so and that typically is while tuning .....

Good luck

edit I forgot the punch line so now I will start with it: the gp 1800 only seats two adults comfortably or a Mix of three adults and kids for a short period/distance. Since kids don’t seem to stay short and small for long your better off getting the vx/ cruiser seat.

We're looking at a GP1800r HO right now said:
My local dealership had both in stock when I bought the gp1800. I was able to put them side by side on carts. Both you and @VitaminSea are correct about the similarities and differences between the two. Basically the GP is 60 pounds lighter and has trim control. The shape of the top/deck is slightly different as well but nothing that improves performance or safety.

The hulls are the same (other than what they are made of / weight) which is, I think the biggest factor in how they handle. The VX may not be as nimble but mostly because of the weight difference and also because the gp has auto trim control.

The seat shape is very important where multiple riders/passengers are concerned. This doesn’t really matter for the driver since the sport and cruiser seats are scalloped but the sport seat is flat for the passengers so they are more likely to slide off of the sport/standard seat than they are the cruiser seat. The cruiser seat will give the passengers the support they need to keep from sliding off of it and will reduce their need to hold on to the driver during aggressive acceleration or high speed maneuvers. For context I had a 2006 FX cruiser and an fx non cruiser for several years, so I’ve experienced the difference but on different / older hills.

my wife and I both went with the non cruiser seats this time around but this was mostly a cost based decision. The seat upgrade is $500 on the FX and there is no upgrade path on the GP which means the only ways to get a cruiser seat on a gp is to buy it separately (about $800 for both parts) or buy a VX instead. Unlike you we didn’t buy with others in mind so the non cruiser seat was fine for us. In your situation I would opt for the VX with a cruiser seat, the fact the the VX has pop up cleats and I believe a usb charger/light in the glove box are just bonuses over the gP. The are reasons the VX has been the best selling pwc model in the world for three years straight now, it’s definitely not just the slightly lower price.

I have driven 500 miles before, several times actually, to pick up boats and jet skis, not quite 10 hours but still a lot of time. Price wise you would probably ended up breaking even if you have to drive 10 hours and back to get the VX, especially if you have to stay overnight.

Between the two I recommend the VX cruiser for you/your situation regardless of the engine size. However if you can swing it and they are available, consider getting two EX models instead, with or without cruiser seats, they have seating for 3 and top out around 52 mph (not 60 something) so towing won’t be a problem, having two usually means you always have one to tow the other back with or to go looking for the other one with.

Good luck with whatever you decide. One last thing, I would not trust any dealership when it comes to delivery times this year. If they don’t have it on the showroom floor there is a good chance they are not getting it this season. This forced me to upgrade into a model with integrated speakers for $880 (including tax) more. The speakers are cool, not $880 cool though. The VX and Gp have the same accessory mounting points so you could mount aftermarket speakers on either for about $120 ($40 per 20w speaker at cost co + $40 for the ram mount parts) if speakers aren’t your thing consider cup holders instead as neither model comes with any.

Let me add one small comment here about the sport seats vs cruiser seats. Please do use your imagination but the sports seats sometimes come in handy in terms of comfort ....

Lol, I have a boat for riding horizontally, while the boat is anchored or drifting that is. Both platforms are to public / open for my wife and I, we are modest and don’t like to show off.

Me too. What are you talking about?

you made a great point about the engine. Its size won’t matter for towing purposes and the 1800 is thirsty even without a supercharger. My wife and I burned burned 12 gallons each to go 60 miles, so we were getting 5 miles per gallon but a lot of that was at wide open throttle. I think the smaller engines would do a lot better.

I bought a 2018 VX Cruiser HO last year which seems to have the same seat as the yellow and black in your pic. I have three kids and had all three of them on with me last year (they were 9, 6, and 5 then) with no issue. In fact I was very surprised how big the seat was compared to my old SeaDoo RXT. 3Up is not super comfortable with adults but perfectly fine with kids. Depending on what you plan to do with it (stay close to shore/park/etc which everybody takes turns OR long cruises), that might sway you but i can tell you the cruiser style seat is much more comfortable for those other than the operator. For the operator both are probably the same. I also agree with the comment about the lip holding kids on easier.

Another thing to consider is the VX Cruiser HO has the pop up cleats which almost are a must in my opinion. Mine doesn’t have them and I’ll probably add them when I can get over drilling holes in it. It’s super annoying trying to hold it to a dock and basically having to jump in the water to connect the rope to the bow eye.

Hello, again. I have read all of your guys's replies, and most of you are saying to get the VX Cruiser HO. The dealer that told that they had a GP1800r HO coming in, do not. So, at this point, it would be a 10 hour+ drive to get either the VX Cruiser HO or the GP1800r HO. I would get the VX, but what about auto trim? I like to ride aggressive and I feel that auto trim would be so much fun. Does auto trim make a big difference? I think I would choose auto trim (GP1800r HO) over the cruiser seat (VX Cruiser HO), but I haven't owned either. Also, in terms of comfortability, is the seat the only main difference?

Thank you all for the help. I am thankful.

Comfort wise, the seat is the main difference. We wanted the GP1800R HO over the VX because of the trim. I quite enjoy it and leave it one pretty much all the time. Makes the lake slalom course more fun. But you do have a lot of factors to consider. Everyone has very valid points. When we went back get a second ski, and faced with the GP1800 vs VX decision again, we got a second GP. But everyone has different wants and needs. We can ride two up towing without a problem.

I chose the new gp 1800 over the FX and VX cruisers because of the auto trim feature. It’s always on on my ski and the only reason I may turn it off is if I let someone less experienced use it but if I had to choose I would limit the top speed instead. If you have to have the auto trim it only comes on the 2021 gp1800s. If you are more concerned with comfort of your passengers than with auto trim (which is automated so I only know it’s there when I look at the trim indicator on the dash as I’ve already gotten used to the performance bump) a Waverunner with a cruiser seat is the only way to go. The only VX that I would have considered is the limited and only because it comes with a bunch of extras like a cover ($250), cleats, tube, etc. for not much more than a naturally aspirated gp1800. Finally whatever you decide, I recommend that you put a deposit on it before making the trip.

The speed limiter is a very cool function we use for less experienced riders. 2 Acceleration profiles and three top speeds (35,45, and 57) We figured to use this a lot while the kids learn and mature.

Yup, love that feature. It puts me at ease if i have to let someone else ride it. Heck, I used it to break in the engine because it allowed me to enjoy the break in without worrying about going over the RPM's etc..

Thank you all for the replies. I think we're going to go with the GP1800r HO. Which color do you guys think I should go with? (Picture for reference) Both look so good.

Also, which dealer do you guys think has them? It would be nice to see both side by side. I live in the Portland, Oregon; Vancouver, Washington, area. I am willing to drive as far as Texas to get one. I've been searching, but haven't had much luck with a dealer that has both.

Thanks y'all.

They both look great, but when we originally thought to do just one, it was red/white just for a lighter color. The second one, of course, was black/red. That is also what Ronnie went with. Both look great.Resized_20210327_110517.jpeg
