We just put our Yamaha 255XD in the water. Started right away but when driving we noticed we couldn't go faster than 10 mph. We knew to stay under the required RPMs but the boat wouldn't move even when trying to put the throttle down fully. Has anyone else had anything similar to this happen on their first run?

I think you need to install the clean out plugs as suggested above. Did you dealer give you an orientation.

Bring it back to the dealer you blow up an engine and @Yamaha voids the warranty.

Yes dealer gave orientation but assumed the clean out plugs were installed correctly. I will confirm they’re locked today.

Normal procedure is to lock them in as you prepare the boat and to remove them at the end of the day.
We are here to help you understand and enjoy your boat.

Is that the only thing I should check related to the boat not driving normally?

It is the only thing that comes to mind that would prevent performance. Yamaha boats throw you back in your seat when you hammer them down. Of course you should make sure the drain plug is installed. It seems you understand the importance of the engine break in procedure. Glad you are taking care of your new baby.
Yamaha has a bad reputation on how they install the anchor locker drain. Probably worth checking. Take a picture from the inside and post it here.

Checking the keel plug, clean out plugs and turning on blower to vent fumes before start up and launch should be the very least things you do everytime.

The break in procedure couldn’t be the cause of this either? Sorry, just concerned because just put the boat in the water!

What do you mean by launch? Just want to make sure I am doing everything correctly.

When you put it in the water. If it stays in at a dock, right then right before you start it up, of course your keel plug would be in all the time if in the water all the time.

After every outing I pull my keel plugs and rinse any silt and sand/debris out of them and leave them out on my swim platform or very loose in the tube after boat is on the trailer till next outing. Then put them in and lock them into place while getting ready to go out.

I don't recall ever hearing someone say that engines being too tight that they effected performance. I am 90% sure your issue is the clean outs. And don't worry. It won't be the last time you forget to install them.:)

Probably not. No thrust is either fowled or clogged jet pumps or plugs are not seated and locked correctly.

As everyone has indicated, I bet the dealer didn't lock in the clean out plugs. I guess what is disappointing is that is sounds like they didn't even discuss one of the most important features of your new Jet boat and how to operate them.

And as @buckbuck mentioned you will forget again. We all do. The worst part is when you are in a heavy chop and just pulled out away from the dock, it is interesting putting them in with the back end of the boat rocking hard and getting thrown around. :)

@pwdrescher Many of us have developed a check list of things to go over prior to putting the boat in the water. It may be something for you to consider.
