    Engine Troubles

Bent valves... however, this is out of a Kawasaki 12F I rebuilt a while ago.

    Engine Troubles

The valves don't open enough to break them at high RPM, but enough to bend them. Like others have said, it's an interference motor, meaning the pistons can come into contact with open valves at top-dead-center, like what happens when you break a timing chain--the cams stop moving but momentum...

    Engine Troubles

@WilCo do you recall the approx. RPM at time the motor shut off? If it was a timing chain failure, compression numbers like that indicate bent valves. The good news is that if you do have bent (and not dropped or broken) valves, the head can likely be rebuilt. 1. Removal of the valve cover to...

    Any 2 stroke experts?

Sounds like you are on top of it @4x15mph! I always thought it would be fun to do a 4-stroke MR1 conversion of an LS2000. I have done five Yamaha SUV MR1 conversions... it should be pretty much the same just 2x (the stock SUVs use 65U motors). Once you move the motor mounts, it's pretty...

    Worst boat season ever

I was just thinking about this the other day... my last boat outing was the week of 4th of July, and mine is in a sling in my boat house! I am so pathetic! -Greg

Completed 2006 Yamaha AR230 for sale in VA $13K

Heck of a deal for someone @PaulyB. There's people paying not much less for 2-stroke boats that will self-destruct in 100 hours. I'm sure this one will run problem free for a long, long time. -Greg

    Any 2 stroke experts?

He'll want to check the cylinder walls for aluminum fragments. Sometimes small ones can be chipped off with a razor blade, or a bit of muriatic acid and then the cylinder honed. Often not and it will need to be bored with oversized pistons. The 65U has steel cylinders and are not nearly as...

    Huge Power Loss

I'm thinking the shaft could wobble under a load if it's worn at the bearings. That's why I asked to see if you could put the pump vane in vice and see if there is any play up/down/left/right or possibly back/forth (though that should not happen).

    Any 2 stroke experts?

@4x15mph you'll find a good deal of information in the 2-stroke Yamaha forums on greenhulk.net. I've rebuilt at least a dozen of the 1200NPVs, but stopped a few years ago when I switched to all 4-strokes. What are your questions? -Greg

    Huge Power Loss

Keep in mind you might not see a problem until the pump is under a load. Not saying this is it, but a worn or driveshaft damaged by bad bearings can only be fixed by tig welding and then turned on a lathe. The bearings wear a large u-shaped groove into the driveshaft. Cheaper to buy a new...

    Huge Power Loss

I have a drive shaft that was subject to badly damaged bearings and it wore an indention in the shaft and is now unusable even with new bearings. That’s why I’m asking.

    Huge Power Loss

To make sure everything is aligned, don't tighten the (5) wear ring/spacer/transom bolts before (4) tightening nozzle/impeller duct/wear ring bolts. This allows some wriggle room for the proper alignment of the impeller duct and wear ring. If you left the wear ring bolted to the transom (like...

    1 pisser not pissing

Many of us that store our boats outside put something in the pisser holes when not in use--a large zip tie works. Saves some frustration later on. To clean out, just remove the hose inside where it attaches to the exhaust, blow an air hose through it, then reattach. -Greg

    Huge Power Loss

The housing closest to the transom is a 2" spacer and common to HO WaveRunners as far back as the GP1300R. I've never really seen a good explanation of why the spacer is there, but my guess is to reduce cavitation. It requires 2" longer wear ring to transom bolts. -Greg

    Huge Power Loss

You'll feel a bent driveshaft--it will shake/vibrate. Very hard to tell unless you remove the shaft and place it on a straight edge. Doubtful the intermediate shaft is bad unless it's leaking, but anything is possible. The intermediate shaft is short, and I doubt a wriggling driveshaft caused...

    Huge Power Loss

Do the pump bearings feel smooth--the shaft/impeller are smooth when turning and you can't wriggle the impeller side to side, or back and forth? Were the bearings the shop (or you) put on OEM or aftermarket? What did the driveshaft look like where it meets the bearings? Many times with a...
