Our family just arrived home after our summer vacation. 8 days and 2,400 miles.
2 adults, three kids, son 15, daughters 12 and 9

We started in Dallas, Tx and visited
Farmington, NM (just for the night)
Shiprock monument
Four Corners monument
Mesa Verde N.P. (that was pretty cool to tour the cliff dwellings and see the Milky Way at night during the ranger program
Arches N.P. (very cool if you like landscapes, not just arches but monoliths, hiked a few short trails and really felt small)
Black Canyon of the Gunnison N.P. (very small but glad we stopped, another very good ranger program and about 6 locals brought their big telescopes for everybody to see stuff)
traveled thru the Gunnison valley and across the continental divide (my wife had to drive because of motion sickness and white knuckled most of it)
Amarillo (just for a night, oh the smell of feed lots!)

I would definitely recommend any of the national parks and the Gunnison valley drive.
