Hey everyone I just bought a 2012 sx190 yesterday and today when I was out on the water for about 5 minutes my boat just shut off and I haven’t been able to turn it back on. When you try and turn it on the engine makes noises and tries to start but just doesn’t. The electronics all work and when I hold it down for a little bit the digital reader will light up saying Hello. I have checked safety landyard, it’s in neutral and checked the little switch under swim platform. New gas in the boat and it has oil. I charged the battery for a while. Could really use some help. Thank you.

I hope it is not the dreaded timing chain failure...

I have no idea what that is. The boat ran great when I tested it at the dealer and ran great yesterday.

Swim platform switch if faulty would not let you turn the engine. Lanyard would, it just grounds the spark plugs. Hopefully it could be faulty lanyard switch.

The TC in pre-2016 1.8 engines have been known to break, they were redesigned later but Yamaha never issued a recall. They usually replace the entire engine on or off the warranty as it is a known issue.
The 1.8 is an interference engine so if the TC breaks it is usually kaput.
Are you close to the dealer? I would imagine you would have a good shot at getting it taken care of, if this is indeed the worst case, TC failure.

I am two hours from the dealer I bought it from. Don’t really want to have to drive all the way there again...

They don’t sell Yamahas either, they just got the boat on trade.

Can you check compression?

--

@Neutron any ideas? What would you do?

--

I don’t know how to check compression.

A simple check for spark. Get any spark plug and pull one coil and rest the side of the plug against a good grounded surface. See if it lights up. If this is not possible for you, get carb cleaner spray or brake cleaner spray and shoot a burst into the intake somewhere and see if it tries to fire then dye out. If it does then you are not getting fuel.

Ok, I will have to see if I can do that. I honestly know nothing about engines so I will have to see if someone can help. Thanks for the help.

My friend did a pull a spark plug out and he said it seemed kind of dry?

This is what my friend said.

“Yeah, we did try that but I couldn’t get the plug to sit in the holder without it in the engine block because the thing is so long.”

He said when he turns on the engine “it makes noises” and you expect he can check compression? :p Jk

OP: what kind of noises does it make? Do you mean it turns over but won’t fire?

Yeah it turns over and it’s trying to start

Ok...gas or ignition...which is missing is what you need to determine. Follow what Neutron has suggested. Very simple..

And relax, it’s likely something very simple.

Ok great thanks, I will.

@SamCF had a fuel pump intake blocked I think, I never heard of it otherwise.
If plugs are wet and give spark, it would indicate its not the lanyard, correct?

Yes, gas and ignition would be first no doubt.

If those check, and the engine turns, any mechanic can check compression, no?
Loss of compression would make me want to pull the head cover. It is relatively easy and only costs a price of a gasket.

Can you see a cam when you look in oil fill cap? If so when you crank and have someone look to see if it rotates to rule out snapped chain

I called a mechanic today and they said they are going to try and come over. They specialize in the jet engines.
