Hey everybody!
New to the group here. I’m looking to purchase my first boat. I am interested in. 2016 Yamaha 242 Limited S E with approximately 200 hours on it. The boat is located approximately 5 hours away from me. I was told it was only used in fresh water. From the pictures and from what the buyer has stated, the engine looks clean and well kept. The sellers are the original owner and was indoor kept during the off-season.
Ive been looking for a marine surveyor to check it over but nobody will look over the engine since they are not familiar with jet boats.
My questions I have…. Are there any known issues with that year make and model? Anything I should be looking for as a red flag? Based on videos and pictures, the only blemishes on the hull are scuff marks that can be buffed out. The hours are slightly low for that year, is that a reason of concern?

thank you for all your input!

Run the HIN/VIN or serial number off the motors with a Yamaha dealer. This does not have to be a Yamaha boat dealer. Any Yamaha powersports dealer can do it. The very late 2015, early 2016 models were when the timing chains were updated. This being a 2016, should have the updates. A dealer can confirm or deny.

Otherwise, there should be minimal concern with that boat as a whole. A water test will tell you if the motors are in good working condition. It should push around 50mph +/- and get on plane easily with 1-8 people and barely struggle with a full load.

Good luck!

I would ask for maintenance records. If it was flushed occasionally in fresh water, regular maint then it should be fine.
I would check the steering, throttle cables, scupper. these are things that probably should be replaced by now.
