Another Bilge Pump Issue

In prepping for the season, I did a once over on everything. I cleaned out the engine compartment and sprayed some water in there. When I hit the bilge pump rocker the light came on, no sound or water getting discharged, then the circuit breaker activated and light when out. I pressed the circuit breaker but after a few seconds the light would go out. I did this a few times. Does this mean the pump is bad or could it just be clogged? Can I shoot water down the bilge outlet to clear it? Whats the best way to attack this issue. I'm big enough that it's difficult to be reaching way down in to get to the pump. Looking for easy solutions first. Thanks

I would think the shaft is corroded in place from sitting. If the shaft can be rotated just a bit, that may free it up. You might try tapping it a few ties with a piece of wood or back flushing it where it exits from the hull? Have you searched the site?

If the pump wasn't coming on, sounds like bad pump? I would try a tap with a rubber mallet to make sure it's not stuck.

I don't think you have a clog. The pump would turn on and but no water would = a clogged line. If your pump isn't turning on, then it's the pump.

If the pump is "stuck" and you get it free, I would check it periodically and if it freezes up again I would replace it with a new one. Hate to be out on the water and need it to work and it's "stuck" and won't run.

Ok, got it. There was no stoppage in the hose. The screen was caked solid and the pump does not operate. Anyone know of a direct replacement for the original so I don't have to remove the base?

Those should be pretty standard - your local Walmart may even have one. If you can't wait, break the pump open and start scrubbing with Dawn / vinegar / brake cleaner.

I bet it'll start working if you turn the impeller.

Nope, it's stuck. Turned the impeller but wont go on its own just blows the circuit. Got another coming from Amazon tomorrow.

Pretty embarrassed that the screen was that bad. The bilge is not exceptionally spotless, but it certainly clean. Would not have thought it could look like that. Something I will check more often. My bilge gets very little water in it.
