It's a cell phone service that is sort of a hybrid "pay as you go" setup: https://ting.com/ It looks like it runs on the Sprint network.

We do not want to spend a lot of cash on cell phone service every month: My wife and eldest daughter have Trac-phones right now. I give 'em a 90 day recharge every 3 months for a grand total of $50 every 3 months.

I'm about to add another cell phone to the collection for my 2nd daughter which will put me at $75 every 3 months - or $25/month on average.

Looking at Ting, I could buy them refurbished smartphones and only see a slight rise in monthly cost. So yeah, there's a "cost of entry" there for the phone - but if it will stop the nagging I've been putting up with from the Eldest for the last 3 years about her crap phone it may be worth it. Plus, I plan to make them pay for part of the phones with their allowances.

The girls have already been trained to do the bulk of their texting over WiFi connections so as long as they stick to that I shouldn't see any spikes in cost. It looks like I can set limits, so that will be the final safety.

Anyone dealt with Ting? Or maybe have a better idea?

I refuse to pay $100-some-bucks a month for cell phone service so I'm looking for an inexpensive solution that could get them smart phones.

I can't speak for that service but we use Page Plus because they are on the Verizon network and Verizon has the best service here. I get unlimited talk and text and 1gb per month of data for ~32.00 after tax. I think it's a good deal. Automatically recharges. If Verizon is good in your area, check them out too. They have other plans also. We just use Wifi mostly and haven't had any problem with data limits. The best thing is if they hit the data limit, they are shut down until next month when it renews.
